Display walls for control rooms and command centres

A control room display shows camera feeds, maps, alarms and dashboards to several operators at once, often 24 hours a day. The display has to stay readable from every desk, run continuously and be serviceable without shutting the room down. This page brings together LG video wall panels with 0.88 mm and 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel seams, older LG 49-inch models for extending existing walls, the 85-inch Samsung QM85C for smaller rooms, and the VSYS VSVW02-46T pop-out video wall mount.

It is written for planning the whole display system of an operations room. For video walls in lobbies, retail and public spaces, where brand content matters more than operator readability, see Digital Signage & Video Walls.

Designing a control room display

Seams and viewing distance

Operators read small text, so the black seam between panels matters more than in a lobby. The LG 55VSH7J-H has a 0.44 mm bezel on each edge and a 0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel seam, which keeps text and map lines unbroken across panels. The LG 55VL5F-A has a 3.5 mm seam, which suits video and large graphics viewed from further back.

Continuous operation and heat

Choose panels rated by the manufacturer for 24/7 operation, such as the LG 55VSH7J-H, LG 55VL5F-A and Samsung QM85C. All three are rated for 0 °C to 40 °C. Plan cooling for the full wall: the LG 55VSH7J-H uses 210 W typical per panel, so a 3 × 3 wall draws about 1.9 kW and turns it into heat, while the Samsung QM85C is rated at 330 W.

Reflections and glare

Ceiling lights and monitor glow reflect off a glossy screen and hide detail. Control room panels use matte surfaces: the LG 55VSH7J-H has a non-glare panel with 28% haze, and the Samsung QM85C has a non-glare panel with 25% haze. Plan the lighting with the wall, keeping downlights off the screen face and away from the operators' line of sight.

Sources, control and service

Feeding the wall

A wall that shows one source can use the panels' built-in tiling: the LG 55VSH7J-H has a DisplayPort output for daisy chaining and a Tile Mode under webOS 4.1. A wall that shows many camera feeds and dashboards at once needs an external video wall processor. The Samsung QM85C has three HDMI 2.0 inputs and one DisplayPort 1.2 input for direct sources.

Monitoring and service

The LG 55VSH7J-H can be controlled, monitored and updated over a LAN daisy chain, and has RS232C and RJ45 ports; the Samsung QM85C has RS232 in and out and RJ45. Pop-out mounts let one panel come out from the front for service while its neighbours stay in place. Keep at least one spare panel of the same model on site, so a failed panel can be swapped during a shift and the wall recalibrated afterwards.

Where control room displays are used

Video walls serve security operations centres and police command rooms, CCTV monitoring rooms, traffic and transport control, utility and network operations, emergency services and corporate crisis rooms. Smaller operations rooms that show a few dashboards to a team can use one large 4K screen instead of a wall; compare LED & Large Format Displays. In the UAE, control rooms often sit in buildings with high outside temperatures, so keep the room's air conditioning sized for the wall's heat load and the panels within their 40 °C limit.

Installation and planning

A control room wall is planned with the room, not added afterwards. Before ordering, check:

  • Structure: the wall or floor must carry every panel and mount; 55-inch LG panels weigh 18.4 kg to 20.3 kg each and the Samsung QM85C 41.9 kg.
  • Service access: front access with pop-out mounts, or a rear service corridor behind the wall.
  • Power and cooling: dedicated circuits and air conditioning sized for the total wattage of the wall.

The VSYS VSVW02-46T pop-out video wall mount is designed for tiled walls, and the VSYS range covers wall and floor mounting. The 55-inch LG 55VSH7J-H (18.4 kg) and LG 55VL5F-A (20.3 kg) use a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern, within the VSVW02-46T rating of 37 to 70 inches, 45 kg and VESA 600 × 400 mm. The 85-inch Samsung QM85C (41.9 kg, VESA 600 × 400 mm) fits the VSYS VS01A-46F fixed wall mount, rated for 37 to 86 inches and 80 kg.

Applications and technical planning

  • Security and CCTV monitoring

Operators watch many camera feeds for hours at a time, which favours narrow-seam, 24/7 rated panels such as the LG 55VSH7J-H with a 0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel gap.

  • Operations and dashboard rooms

Teams that follow a few dashboards can use one 85-inch 4K screen such as the Samsung QM85C, rated for 24/7 operation, instead of a tiled wall.

  • Serviceable walls

Pop-out mounts such as the VSYS VSVW02-46T let one panel come out from the front for service while the rest of the wall keeps running.

Frequently asked questions

Which bezel width should I choose for a control room video wall?

Choose the narrowest seam the budget allows when operators read small text, maps or spreadsheets. The LG 55VSH7J-H has a 0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel seam, made of a 0.44 mm bezel on each panel edge.

Walls that mainly show video and large graphics viewed from further away can use a wider seam, such as the 3.5 mm of the LG 55VL5F-A. Compare models by the bezel-to-bezel figure, because a single-edge figure is about half of it.

Can control room displays run 24 hours a day?

Yes, if the manufacturer rates the model for 24/7 operation. The LG 55VSH7J-H, LG 55VL5F-A and Samsung QM85C are rated for 24/7 use and for an operating temperature of 0 °C to 40 °C.

Continuous operation adds heat, so keep the room's air conditioning sized for the whole wall and leave the ventilation space the installation manual requires. Older or non-rated models should not be used for round-the-clock walls.

How much power and cooling does a video wall need?

Add up the rated power of every panel. The LG 55VSH7J-H uses 210 W typical and 250 W maximum, so a 3 × 3 wall of nine panels draws about 1.9 kW typical, nearly all of which becomes heat in the room.

A single Samsung QM85C is rated at 330 W. Give the wall dedicated circuits, and size the air conditioning for the displays plus the operators and their workstations.

Do I need a video wall processor for a control room?

Usually yes. Built-in tiling, such as the DisplayPort daisy chain and Tile Mode of the LG 55VSH7J-H, shows one source stretched across the wall. A control room normally needs many camera feeds, maps and dashboards on screen at once, in layouts operators can change.

An external video wall processor takes those sources and places them as windows anywhere on the wall. Choose it by the number and type of inputs and the layouts the operators need.

How do I stop reflections on a control room video wall?

Choose panels with a matte, non-glare surface and plan the lighting with the wall. The LG 55VSH7J-H has a non-glare panel with 28% haze, and the Samsung QM85C has a non-glare panel with 25% haze.

Keep downlights and windows from facing the screen, and use dimmable, indirect lighting in front of the wall. Reflections hide detail on dark map backgrounds and camera feeds, so test the lighting at night as well as by day.

Should a small operations room use a video wall or one large screen?

A room that shows a few dashboards to a small team can use one large 4K screen, which has no seams and costs less to install. The Samsung QM85C is an 85-inch 3840 × 2160 screen rated for 24/7 operation with 500 nit typical brightness.

Choose a video wall when the room needs a larger image than one screen, or many sources at once, such as a 3 × 3 wall of 55-inch panels.

How are video wall panels serviced without shutting down the wall?

Use pop-out video wall mounts that let one panel come out from the front while its neighbours stay in place, or leave a rear service corridor behind the wall. The VSYS VSVW02-46T is a pop-out mount designed for tiled walls.

Remote monitoring helps find a fault early: the LG 55VSH7J-H can be controlled, monitored and updated over a LAN daisy chain. Keep a spare panel of the same model, and recalibrate after a replacement.

Can a new panel be added to an older control room video wall?

Yes, if the new panel matches the old ones. Use the same model where possible, because a different model can differ in bezel, brightness, colour and depth, and the difference shows in a tiled wall.

This page includes older LG 49-inch models, the 49VL5F-A and 49VL5G, for extending or repairing existing walls. Check the model number on the back of the installed panels before ordering, then recalibrate the whole wall.

How much does a 55-inch video wall panel weigh?

The 55-inch LG 55VSH7J-H weighs 18.4 kg and the LG 55VL5F-A 20.3 kg per panel. Both use a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern. The 85-inch Samsung QM85C single screen weighs 41.9 kg and also uses 600 × 400 mm VESA.

Add the weight of the mounts and check that the wall or floor can carry the whole array. Many control room walls use a floor-supported frame for this reason.

What information is needed to design a control room display?

Start with six facts: the number of operators and their distance from the wall, the sources and how many show at once, the smallest text that must be read, the daily operating hours, the room lighting, and the wall construction and service access.

These decide the panel model and seam width, the wall layout such as 3 × 3, the processor, the mounts and the power and cooling the room needs.
