Cables and connectors for conferencing, audio and displays
AV cables and connectors carry one specific signal between two specific devices: USB data from a conference camera, a loudspeaker feed from an amplifier, an RF signal from an antenna, or video from a laptop to a display. This collection holds manufacturer system cables from Logitech, Shure, d&b audiotechnik, Bose and Yealink, plus HDMI and DisplayPort leads from ViewSonic and LG, in lengths from 1.5 m to 45 m.
A cable only moves a signal from one point to another. If the task is to choose between several sources, connect a visitor laptop to the room system or power networked devices, see Switchers & Extenders. Complete room systems, with the cables that ship in the box, are in Video Conferencing Kits.
How to choose a cable or connector
Match the signal, not the plug
Two cables with the same connector can carry different things. A Logitech Rally Mic Pod Extension Cable carries the Rally microphone signal and works only with Rally systems; a d&b NL4 speakON cable carries amplifier power to a loudspeaker and must never carry a microphone signal. Start from the source and destination model numbers, then choose the cable the manufacturer lists for that pair.
Length, passive or active
Ordinary USB 3.x cables are short, so long runs need an active cable. The Logitech Strong USB cable is an active optical USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable at up to 10 Gbps, made in 10 m, 25 m and 45 m lengths, and is meant for self-powered devices and hubs such as the Rally Camera, MeetUp and Tap. Plan the length before ordering, because active cables are not joined or shortened on site.
Antenna cable loss for wireless microphones
Coaxial antenna cable loses RF signal over distance, and the loss depends on the cable type. Shure gives about 12 dB per 100 ft for RG-8X/U and about 7 dB per 100 ft for RG-213/U at 800 MHz, and recommends RG-8X/U for runs up to about 25 ft (7.6 m). The Shure UA825, UA850 and UA8100 are 25 ft, 50 ft and 100 ft BNC to BNC cables; for the longer runs, Shure recommends lower-loss cable or a UA834 antenna amplifier, with no more than two in one line.
System cables made for one manufacturer
Conferencing extension cables
Logitech room systems use their own extension cables. The Rally Mic Pod Extension Cable adds 10 m, and two can be joined for 20 m with a Rally Bar or Rally Bar Mini. The Cat5e Kit for Logitech Tap carries USB data and power over category cable, with 10 m included and runs of up to 40 m with your own cable. Both the Rally Mic Pod Extension Cable and the Strong USB cable are plenum rated and ECA certified for walls, ceilings and raceways.
Loudspeaker cables and adapters
d&b audiotechnik loudspeaker cables follow the d&b connector system: MC2.5 cables with NL4 connectors, MC4 cables with NLT4, MC8 cables with NLT8, and MC24 multicore cables with LKA 25 connectors. Adapters change between them; the Z5344.001, for example, splits one NLT8 connector into four NLT4 connectors. Use the d&b cabling diagram for the amplifier and loudspeaker series to pick the right set.
Where these cables are used
In meeting rooms, extension and USB cables let the camera sit at the display, the microphones on the table and the computer in a cabinet; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. In halls, ballrooms and venues, loudspeaker cables run from Power Amplifiers to the speakers, and antenna cables bring remote antennas back to the Wireless Microphones & Transmitters rack. In UAE buildings many runs go through air-conditioned ceiling voids and raised floors, so plenum-rated cable and a fixed, labelled route matter.
Installation and planning
A cable schedule made before ceilings close saves rework. For each run, check:
- Endpoints: the exact source and destination models, and the cable or adapter the manufacturer lists for them.
- Route and length: the measured route with slack, within the manufacturer's maximum, and the plenum or conduit rating it needs.
- Labels and spares: both ends labelled with the part number, and a spare for system cables that cannot be bought locally on short notice.
Test each run at its final length with the real devices before handover. Active USB and fibre cables have a direction: the host end goes to the computer or hub.
Cables in this collection by system
The collection is easiest to use by system rather than by connector type.
- Conferencing: Logitech Strong USB Cable 25 m, Logitech Rally Mic Pod Extension Cable and the Logitech Cat5e Kit for Tap, for Rally, MeetUp and Tap rooms.
- Wireless microphone RF: Shure UA850 and Shure UA8100 BNC antenna cables, and reverse SMA versions for Shure systems with reverse SMA antenna ports.
- Loudspeakers: d&b audiotechnik Z2299.010 MC2.5 NL4 cable, MC4, MC8 and MC24 cables from 1 m to 50 m, and NLT8 adapters.
