Subwoofers for venues, events and installed sound
A subwoofer reproduces the lowest frequencies, roughly below 100 to 150 Hz, that full-range speakers cannot deliver at level. Adding one gives music weight and impact in ballrooms, clubs, auditoriums and event systems. This collection holds 104 subwoofers from d&b audiotechnik, JBL Professional, Bose Professional and Electro-Voice, from the 2 × 6.5-inch d&b B8-SUB to dual 18-inch JBL SRX828SP and flyable d&b KSL-SUB cardioid models, plus in-ceiling and outdoor subwoofers.
A subwoofer always works with full-range speakers, so choose it with the main system in Loudspeakers. Passive models need an amplifier from Power Amplifiers, and ceiling systems add bass with the in-ceiling models listed alongside Ceiling & Wall-Mount Speakers.
How to choose a subwoofer
Driver size and low-frequency extension
Larger drivers move more air and reach lower. d&b rates the 12-inch 12S-SUB from 45 Hz, the 18-inch 18S-SUB from 37 Hz and the 21-inch 21S-SUB from 35 Hz (33 Hz in INFRA mode), at -5 dB. JBL rates the 18-inch PRX918XLF from 30 Hz at -10 dB with a 134 dB maximum SPL, and Electro-Voice rates the ELX200-18SP from 40 Hz at 132 dB. Compare figures at the same -5 dB or -10 dB point.
Mobile, installation and cardioid models
Mobile subwoofers have handles, casters and pole sockets for events, while installation models such as the d&b xS-Series (12S, 18S, 21S and 27S-SUB) are designed for permanent fixing. Cardioid subwoofers cut the sound behind them, which keeps stages quieter: the d&b KSL-SUB uses 3 × 15-inch drivers, reaches 139 dB SPL and can be flown with KSL arrays or ground-stacked as the KSL-GSUB.
Passive or powered
Powered subwoofers include the amplifier and DSP. The JBL SRX828SP has 2 × 18-inch drivers, a 2,000 W Crown DriveCore amplifier, 20 parametric EQs and 50 user presets, and the JBL PRX918XLF has 1,000 W RMS with app control. The Electro-Voice ELX200-18SP has 1,200 W Class D and Bluetooth control for up to 6 speakers. Passive models such as the d&b B6-SUB need an external amplifier, with presets in d&b amplifiers such as the D40.
System integration
Crossover and alignment
The crossover decides where the subwoofer hands over to the main speakers. The d&b 18S-SUB covers 37 to 140 Hz in standard mode and 37 to 100 Hz in 100 Hz mode, and the Electro-Voice ELX200-18SP offers 80, 100, 120 or 150 Hz low-pass settings. After setting the crossover, align the subwoofer delay with the main speakers so the bass stays tight at the listening area.
Amplifier power and impedance
For passive subwoofers, match power and impedance to the amplifier. The d&b 21S-SUB is a 4 Ω cabinet rated 650 W RMS and 2,600 W peak, while the 18S-SUB and E15X-SUB are 8 Ω cabinets rated 400 W and 300 W RMS. d&b lists the amplifiers that carry presets for each cabinet, such as the D40 for mobile use and the 40D or 10D for installations.
Where subwoofers are used
Ballrooms and banquet halls use subwoofers for dinners, weddings and product launches, clubs and bars for dance music, and auditoriums and places of worship for film, music and live bands. Ceiling systems in restaurants and retail add bass with in-ceiling or surface models such as the Bose DesignMax DM10S-Sub. In the UAE, outdoor terraces, pools and beach venues need weather-rated models: the Bose MB210-WR is rated IP55 for direct-exposure outdoor installation, and d&b offers weather-resistant versions of several xS and E-Series subwoofers.
Installation and planning
Subwoofers are heavy and their placement shapes the bass across the room. Before ordering, check:
- Weight and rigging: from 16 kg for the d&b 12S-SUB to 54 kg for the 21S-SUB and 82 kg for the KSL-SUB; use the maker's rigging for flown subwoofers.
- Placement: floor or wall placement adds output (Bose rates the MB210-WR at 90 dB free field and 96 dB on a wall or ceiling).
- Power and connectors: mains outlets for powered models, and the right NL4 or NLT4 connector version for passive d&b cabinets.
Use the subwoofer maker's brackets and flying frames; VSYS makes no speaker brackets. Many d&b subwoofers here are listed in two connector versions, NL4 or NLT4 F/M, so check the version against the cabling.
