Laptop connection, extension and PoE for meeting rooms

This collection covers the devices that connect laptops and networked equipment to a video conferencing room: Logitech Swytch and Logitech Extend for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) meetings, the Logitech Screen Share HDMI capture device, Logitech docks, receivers and a spare GROUP hub, and Yealink RCH PoE switches from 4 to 24 ports. It does not hold HDMI matrix switchers or HDBaseT video extenders for signage or video walls.

These devices join equipment together; the cables between them are in Cables & Connectors. If guests only need to show a laptop screen on the display, without using the room camera and microphones, a wireless option from Wireless Presentation & Screen Sharing may be simpler than a wired BYOD connection.

How to choose a connection device

Laptop to room system at the table: Logitech Swytch

Logitech Swytch links a laptop to the room's conference camera, microphones and display with one cable, so a guest can run a meeting in their own platform. It works with Windows, Mac and Chromebook laptops that have a USB 3.0 or higher Type-A or Type-C port, delivers 60 W to laptops that charge over USB-C, and is used in Microsoft Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms with USB cameras and video bars.

Longer distances: Logitech Extend

Logitech Extend puts a Table Side (TX) box at the table and a Display Side (RX) box at the display, linked by standard category cable for up to 100 m. The laptop connects with one USB-C cable and can receive up to 100 W, and the RX box outputs HDMI 2.0 at 4K 60 Hz. Extend works in BYOD mode with the Rally Bar family and with Logitech USB conference cameras, and with Swytch in PC-based rooms.

PoE budget for networked room devices

Networked microphones, cameras and touch panels are often powered over Ethernet, so the switch must supply enough power. The Yealink RCH40 has four Gigabit PoE ports and one uplink, up to 30 W per port and 90 W in total. The RCH80 has 8 PoE ports, 2 SFP fibre ports and a 130 W budget; the RCH240 has 24 PoE ports, 4 SFP ports and 370 W. Add up the PoE class of every device before choosing.

Network and USB details

Managed AV switches

The Yealink RCH80 and RCH240 are L2+ managed PoE+ switches with IGMP snooping and fast leave, which keep multicast audio and video traffic from flooding every port. Their SFP ports let a room rack connect to the building network over fibre. The 4-port RCH40 is a compact hub for a single room, powered by its own 48 V, 2 A adapter.

Receivers, docks and spare hubs

The collection also holds Logitech replacement parts: Unifying and Audio Receivers in UC and Microsoft Teams versions, Logi Dock units, and a USB spare hub for the Logitech GROUP system. Order these by the exact Logitech part number on the existing equipment, because UC and Microsoft Teams versions are configured differently.

Where these devices are used

Swytch and Extend suit meeting rooms and boardrooms where visitors and partners bring their own laptops and meeting platforms; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. The Yealink RCH switches sit in the room rack or under the table in larger video rooms, where ceiling microphones, cameras and touch panels all run on one network; see Video Conferencing & Hybrid Workspace Solutions. In UAE offices, where switches often share a closed credenza, plan ventilation as well as power.

Installation and planning

Connection devices are easy to add late, but they work best when the cabling is planned with the room. Before ordering, check:

  • Room system: the conference camera or video bar model and whether the room runs on an appliance or a PC, which decides between Swytch and Extend.
  • Distances: the cable route from table to display, up to 100 m of category cable for Logitech Extend.
  • Power: the PoE class of each networked device against the 90 W, 130 W or 370 W budget of the Yealink switch.

The Logitech Extend boxes have a 100 × 100 mm VESA pattern and through-holes for wall or table mounting, so they can sit behind the display or under the table. Test a guest laptop of each common type before handover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Logitech Swytch and Logitech Extend?

Both let a guest run a meeting from their own laptop with the room's camera, microphones and display. Logitech Swytch connects at the table with one USB cable, works with USB 3.0 or higher Type-A or Type-C laptops and supplies 60 W to USB-C laptops.

Logitech Extend adds a table box and a display box linked by category cable for up to 100 m, supplies up to 100 W over USB-C and outputs HDMI 2.0 at 4K 60 Hz. Choose Extend for long tables and large rooms.

Does Logitech Swytch work with Microsoft Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms?

Yes. Logitech lists Swytch for Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms and other room solutions that use a USB conference camera, an all-in-one video bar or a modular conference camera.

When a guest connects, the laptop uses the room's camera, microphones and display, so the guest can join a meeting on a different platform from the one the room normally runs. Swytch works with Windows, Mac and Chromebook laptops that have a USB 3.0 or higher port.

How far can Logitech Extend reach between the table and the display?

Logitech Extend reaches up to 100 m using standard category cable between its Table Side (TX) box and its Display Side (RX) box. The laptop connects to the table box with a single USB-C cable.

The display box has an HDMI 2.0 output at 4K 60 Hz for the display and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports for the camera and other room devices. Both boxes measure 143 × 143 × 34.5 mm and have a 100 × 100 mm VESA pattern for mounting.

Can Logitech Extend charge the presenter's laptop?

Yes. Logitech Extend can deliver up to 100 W to a connected laptop or mobile device when a standard USB-C power adapter is connected to the Table Side (TX) box.

The adapter is optional, so the connection still carries video and USB data without it. Laptops that need more than 100 W while running a meeting may still draw on their own battery, so check the laptop's charging requirement for long sessions.

Which laptops need a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode for Logitech Extend?

Logitech Extend connects to the laptop with USB-C and uses DisplayPort Alt Mode to carry video, so the laptop's USB-C port must support video output. Many business laptops mark these ports with a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol.

Laptops with a USB-C port that only carries data or charging will not show their screen through Extend. For a room where guests bring older laptops with USB-A only, Logitech Swytch accepts USB 3.0 or higher Type-A as well as Type-C.

How much PoE power does the Yealink RCH40 provide?

The Yealink RCH40 provides up to 30 W per port on four Gigabit PoE ports, with a total PoE budget of 90 W, and has one Gigabit uplink port. It supports IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at and runs from a 48 V, 2 A power adapter.

Add up the PoE class of every connected device before using it. Yealink notes that if the power demand exceeds the switch budget, an additional PoE switch is needed.

When should I choose the Yealink RCH80 or RCH240 instead of the RCH40?

Choose them when a room or floor has more networked devices or needs fibre to the building network. The Yealink RCH80 has 8 Gigabit PoE ports, 2 SFP fibre ports and a 130 W PoE budget; the RCH240 has 24 Gigabit PoE ports, 4 SFP ports and 370 W.

Both are L2+ managed switches with IGMP snooping and fast leave for multicast audio and video. The RCH40 suits one room with a few devices and a 90 W total budget.

Are there HDMI matrix switchers or HDBaseT extenders in this collection?

No. This collection currently holds meeting room connection products: Logitech Swytch and Extend for laptop connection, Logitech Screen Share for HDMI capture, Logitech docks, receivers and a spare hub, and Yealink RCH40, RCH80 and RCH240 PoE switches.

For a signage, video wall or multi-source presentation system that needs HDMI matrix switching or long HDMI extension, describe the sources, displays and distances in a project request, so the right signal distribution products can be specified.

Which Logitech receiver or hub do I need as a replacement?

Order by the Logitech part number printed on the existing device or its packaging. The Unifying and Audio Receiver comes in a UC version and a Microsoft Teams version, which are configured differently, so the replacement must match the original version.

The Logitech GROUP USB spare hub replaces the hub of an existing GROUP conference system. If the part number is not readable, the model of the headset, dock or GROUP system it belongs to is usually enough to identify the right replacement.

What information is needed to plan BYOD and PoE equipment for a meeting room?

Plan with five facts: the conference camera or video bar model, whether the room runs on an appliance or a PC, the cable distance from the table to the display, the laptop types guests bring, and the list of networked devices with their PoE class.

These decide between Logitech Swytch and Logitech Extend, whether up to 100 m of category cable is needed, and whether a 90 W, 130 W or 370 W Yealink switch has enough power budget.
