Digital signage and video walls for lobbies, retail and public spaces

A digital signage system puts managed content on screens where people pass, wait or shop: a reception wall, a shop window, a menu board or a showroom feature wall. Each system has three parts that are planned together: the screens or video wall, the content and how it is scheduled, and the mounting and power behind it. This page covers that planning, with Samsung QBC and QMC 4K signage screens, an LG commercial TV, the LG 55VM5J-H video wall panel and an LG stand.

It is written for brand, retail and visitor content. For walls that operators watch all day, such as security or network operations, see Control Rooms & Command Centers, where seams, heat and service come first.

Planning a signage system

One screen or a video wall

A single 4K screen suits menus, room directories and most retail messages, and the Samsung QM85C reaches 85 inches with no seams. A video wall tiles narrow-bezel panels into a larger canvas for a feature wall or showroom; the LG 55VM5J-H has a 1.74 mm bezel-to-bezel seam and supports portrait and landscape layouts. Choose a wall when one screen is too small for the space.

Brightness and operating hours

Match brightness and duty rating to the location. The Samsung QB55C has 350 nit typical brightness and is rated for 16 hours a day, which suits shops and offices with opening hours. The Samsung QM85C and LG 55VM5J-H have 500 nit and are rated for 24/7 operation. Screens that face the street through glass or stand in direct sun need far higher brightness; see Outdoor Displays.

Content and scheduling

Signage only works if the content stays current. Samsung QBC and QMC screens run Tizen 7.0 with built-in playback, so content can play without a separate media player, and Samsung VXT CMS is a cloud service that combines content management with remote device management. Decide early who creates content, who approves it and how often each screen changes. A simple rule set, such as weekly menu updates and a fixed brand loop in the lobby, keeps screens current without daily work.

Connections and installation details

Inputs and control

Most signage plays from the screen's own player, with HDMI for a live source. The Samsung QB55C has three HDMI 2.0 inputs, RS232 in and out and RJ45 for network control; the QM85C adds a DisplayPort 1.2 input. The LG 55VM5J-H has two HDMI inputs, DisplayPort, DVI-D, RS232C and RJ45; walls that show several sources at once also need a video wall processor.

Slim mounting and portrait layouts

Retail and reception walls are often shallow. The Samsung QB55C is 28.5 mm deep and weighs 15.7 kg, with an even 11.5 mm bezel on all four sides, which keeps the frame balanced in portrait mode. Check that the chosen screen supports portrait installation before planning a tall layout, and allow space behind recessed screens for cables and air flow.

Where signage systems are used

Corporate lobbies use screens and video walls for welcome messages, brand films and visitor information. Shops and malls use them for promotions and window displays, restaurants for menu boards, and showrooms for product walls at a scale one screen cannot reach. Where content should stand on its own on the floor, such as wayfinding or self-service, a freestanding unit from Kiosks fits better than a wall screen. In UAE malls and lobbies, many screens face glazed atriums, so check daylight on the screen at midday before choosing brightness.

Installation and planning

Signage is installed into finished interiors, so the details are agreed before the wall is closed. Before ordering, check:

  • Wall and weight: the wall construction and the weight and VESA pattern of each screen or panel.
  • Power and data: a socket and a network point behind each screen, and a cable path for any live source.
  • Hours and heat: the daily operating hours against the screen's 16/7 or 24/7 rating, and ventilation behind recessed screens.

For wall mounts, floor stands, trolleys and video wall mounts, see the VSYS range. The Samsung QB55C uses a 200 × 200 mm VESA pattern, while the Samsung QM85C and LG 55VM5J-H use 600 × 400 mm.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose one large screen or a video wall for a lobby?

Choose one large screen when it is big enough for the space, because it has no seams and is simpler to install and manage. The Samsung QM85C is an 85-inch 4K screen rated for 24/7 operation.

Choose a video wall when the space needs a larger canvas than one screen, such as a reception feature wall. The LG 55VM5J-H video wall panel has a 1.74 mm bezel-to-bezel seam and supports portrait and landscape layouts.

What does 16/7 or 24/7 mean on a signage screen?

It is the daily operating time the manufacturer rates the screen for: 16/7 means up to 16 hours a day, seven days a week, and 24/7 means continuous use. The Samsung QB55C is rated 16/7, and the Samsung QM85C and LG 55VM5J-H are rated 24/7.

Choose a 16/7 screen for shops and offices that close at night, and a 24/7 screen for malls, airports or lobbies where content runs around the clock.

How bright should an indoor signage screen be?

For indoor spaces with normal lighting, 350 to 500 nit is typical. The Samsung QB55C has 350 nit typical brightness, and the Samsung QM85C and LG 55VM5J-H have 500 nit.

Screens near large windows or glazed atriums need more brightness to stay readable at midday, and screens facing the street through glass or in direct sun need outdoor or high-brightness models. Check the location at the brightest time of day before choosing.

Do Samsung signage screens need a separate media player?

Usually not. Samsung QBC and QMC screens run Tizen 7.0 with built-in storage, 8 GB on the QB55C and 16 GB on the QM85C, so they can play scheduled content on their own.

Samsung VXT CMS is a cloud service that combines content management with remote device management, so content and settings can be changed without visiting each screen. A separate player is still useful for special software or interactive content.

Can a signage screen be installed in portrait orientation?

Yes, many signage screens can be installed in portrait, but check the model. Samsung designed the QBC series with an even 11.5 mm bezel on all four sides so the frame looks balanced in portrait as well as landscape, and the LG 55VM5J-H video wall panel supports both orientations.

Portrait suits menus, posters and wayfinding. Use a mount rated for portrait installation and check the ventilation guidance in the installation manual.

How thin and light is the Samsung QB55C?

The Samsung QB55C is 28.5 mm deep and weighs 15.7 kg. Its overall size is 1237.9 × 708.8 mm, and it uses a 200 × 200 mm VESA pattern.

Samsung describes it as the slimmest display in its UHD signage range and offers a slim wall mount for it, which keeps it close to the wall in shops, offices and reception areas where depth is limited.

What is the difference between a lobby video wall and a control room video wall?

A lobby or retail wall shows brand and promotional content to visitors, so brightness, colour and appearance come first. A control room wall shows camera feeds and dashboards to operators all day, so very narrow seams, 24/7 rating, cooling and front service matter most.

The LG 55VM5J-H, with a 1.74 mm seam and 500 nit, suits lobby and showroom walls. Operator walls often use panels with narrower seams.

What connections do signage screens have?

The Samsung QB55C has three HDMI 2.0 inputs, two USB ports, RS232 in and out and RJ45 for network control. The Samsung QM85C adds a DisplayPort 1.2 input.

The LG 55VM5J-H video wall panel has two HDMI inputs, DisplayPort, DVI-D, RS232C and RJ45. Use the network port for remote management, and plan HDMI only where a live source such as a camera or a PC must be shown.

How much power does a signage screen use?

The Samsung QB55C uses 154 W in on mode and 0.5 W in sleep mode. The 85-inch Samsung QM85C uses 330 W in on mode.

For a video wall, multiply the panel figure by the number of panels and plan a dedicated circuit. Scheduling screens to switch off outside opening hours reduces energy use and heat, and keeps 16/7 rated screens within their rating.

What information is needed to plan a digital signage project?

Plan with six facts: each location and its lighting, the screen size or wall layout, the daily operating hours, landscape or portrait content, the wall construction at each position, and who creates and approves the content.

These decide between a 16/7 or 24/7 screen, one screen or a video wall, the mount for each position, and whether content runs on the screen's own player with a cloud CMS.
