Projectors for meeting rooms, classrooms and large venues
A projector creates a large image on a screen or wall from a single unit, which makes it the most economical way to show a 100-inch to 300-inch picture. This collection holds 174 LG and Sony projectors: LG ProBeam laser installation projectors and CineBeam home and portable models, and Sony 3LCD installation projectors, Sony SXRD 4K projectors from 1,500 to 10,000 lumens and the 18,000-lumen Sony SRX-T615 for cinemas.
The projector is chosen with its screen. Size and surface are compared in Projection Screens. Where the room is too bright for projection or the image must work with the lights fully on, the direct-view walls in LED Displays are the alternative.
How to choose a projector
Brightness
Brightness in lumens decides how large the image can be and how much room light it can stand. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 gives 6,000 lm for meeting rooms and classrooms, the LG ProBeam BU70QGA 7,000 ANSI lumens for lobbies and halls, and the Sony VPL-FHZ131L 13,000 lm for auditoriums. The Sony VPL-GTZ380 reaches 10,000 lm with a 16,000:1 contrast ratio for simulation and premium cinema rooms. Sony also quotes a centre figure: 6,500 lm for the VPL-PHZ60 and 13,600 lm for the VPL-FHZ131L, so compare the standard rating with the standard rating between brands.
Resolution
Match the resolution to the content and the viewing distance. Business installation models such as the Sony VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L are WUXGA, 1920 × 1200 pixels in a 16:10 format suited to computer content. The LG BU70QGA projects 4K UHD at 3840 × 2160, and the Sony VPL-GTZ380 shows true 4K at 4096 × 2160 without pixel shifting.
Lens, throw and image alignment
The throw ratio sets how far back the projector must sit for a given image width. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 has a 1.6x zoom with a throw ratio of 1.23 to 1.97 and lens shift of -35% to +55% vertically and ±15% horizontally. The LG BU70QGA has a motorised 1.6x zoom, a throw ratio of 1.53 to 2.45 and lens shift of +60% / -33% vertically and ±28% horizontally, plus 25-point keystone adjustment and 4 to 25-point warping.
Light source, connectivity and control
Laser or lamp light source
Laser projectors need no lamp changes. LG rates the BU70QGA laser for up to 20,000 hours, and the Sony VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L use laser diodes. The collection also lists Sony lamp-based 3LCD models, many of them earlier generations kept for replacing or extending existing installations; check the model number of installed projectors before ordering.
Inputs and control
Installation projectors receive video over a single long cable and join the room control system. The LG BU70QGA and Sony VPL-PHZ60 have HDBaseT and RS-232C control, and the BU70QGA runs webOS Signage 6.0 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The Sony VPL-FHZ131L accepts interchangeable lenses and an optional 3G-SDI input adaptor for broadcast and staging feeds.
Where projectors are used
Boardrooms and training rooms use 5,000 to 7,000-lumen laser projectors with a ceiling-recessed or electric screen; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. Universities and schools use them in lecture halls and classrooms; see Education & Training Spaces. Museums, malls and event spaces in the UAE blend several projectors into one panoramic image; LG supports edge blending on the ProBeam BU70QGA. In rooms with large windows, plan blinds or a higher brightness, because daylight lowers projected contrast. Home cinemas and private screening rooms use the Sony SXRD and LG CineBeam 4K models listed below.
Installation and planning
A projector is planned from the screen: image size first, then throw distance, then the mounting point. Before ordering, check:
- Throw distance: the distance from lens to screen for the chosen model and zoom setting.
- Brightness for the room: image size, room light and the screen surface's gain.
- Signal and control: HDBaseT, HDMI or SDI runs and the control system protocol.
For ceiling or wall mounting, VSYS projector mounts carry 20 kg or 35 kg with tilt, swivel and 360° rotation; see Projector Mounts. Heavier venue projectors, such as the 51 kg Sony VPL-GTZ380, need a mounting frame rated by the installer. Leave the ventilation clearance the manual specifies around the projector, and plan safe access to the lens and air filter for service, especially above seating.
Projectors by application
The projectors in this collection fall into three groups by where they are used.
- Meeting rooms and classrooms: Sony VPL-PHZ60 (6,000 lm, WUXGA laser) and LG ProBeam BU70QGA (7,000 ANSI lumens, 4K UHD).
- Auditoriums and large venues: Sony VPL-FHZ131L (13,000 lm) and Sony VPL-GTZ380 (10,000 lm, native 4K).
- Home cinema and ultra short throw: Sony VPL-XW7000ES 4K SXRD laser and LG CineBeam HU915QE ultra short throw.
