Outdoor displays built for sun, heat and weather

An outdoor display is a commercial LCD screen sealed against dust and water and bright enough to stay readable in direct sunlight. The models in this collection are rated at 3,000 to 4,000 nit, and the main 55-inch models carry IP56 protection and are designed to run from -30 °C to 50 °C. They come from Samsung (the OHDX series and the 24-inch OH24E) and LG (the XE3P, XE3C and XE4F series), in 24, 46, 49 and 55-inch sizes.

Outdoor models cost more and weigh more than indoor screens, so use them only where the screen is exposed to sun, rain or open air. For screens inside air-conditioned shops, offices and malls, the indoor range in Digital Signage Displays is the better fit, and the older LED-backlit screens in LED Displays suit like-for-like replacements indoors.

How to choose an outdoor display

Weather and impact protection

The Samsung OHDX and LG XE3P, XE3C and XE4F models are rated IP56, which means it is protected against dust and against water jets, so it can stand in the open without an extra enclosure. The front glass protects the LCD from knocks: the Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B and 55XE4F-M use IK10-rated glass, and the LG 55XE3P-B glass is 5 mm thick, tempered and chemically strengthened. IK10 matters at street level, bus stops and fuel stations where the screen can be hit.

Heat and operating temperature

The Samsung OHDX and the LG 55XE3P-B and 55XE3C-B are rated for -30 °C to 50 °C, with internal fans and sensors that manage heat. In the UAE the air temperature alone can approach that limit in summer, and a dark screen in direct sun gets hotter than the air. Face the screen away from the afternoon sun where possible, and keep the ventilation openings clear. The LG 55XE3P-B, 55XE3C-B and Samsung OHDX are rated for 24/7 operation.

Brightness and sunlight readability

Brightness decides whether the screen can be read at midday. The LG 55XE3C-B is rated at 3,000 cd/m² through its front glass, the Samsung OHDX at 3,500 nit typical with a 4,000 nit peak, the LG 55XE3P-B at 3,500 nit typical and 2,800 nit minimum, and the LG 55XE4F-M at 4,000 cd/m². The LG 55XE4F-M also stays visible to viewers wearing polarised sunglasses. For a screen behind a shopfront window rather than fully outdoors, 3,000 nit is usually enough.

Content, control and monitoring

Built-in players

Outdoor screens are hard to reach, so a built-in player avoids a separate PC in the housing. The Samsung OHDX runs Samsung's Tizen platform with 8 GB of storage, and the LG 55XE3P-B runs webOS 6.1, which supports HTML apps and local content scheduling. The LG 55XE3C-B has HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI inputs for an external player, plus an SD card slot and USB 3.0.

Sensors and remote management

Outdoor models adjust themselves to their surroundings. Brightness sensors lower the output at night and raise it at noon, which saves power and reduces glare: the LG 55XE3P-B is rated at 380 W typical and 430 W maximum, and the Samsung OHDX at 580 W in on mode. RS232C and RJ45 control on the LG 55XE3C-B, and network management on the OHDX and XE3P, let an operator check temperature and status without visiting the site.

Where outdoor displays are used

Drive-thru restaurants use outdoor screens as menu boards, fuel stations and car washes use them for prices and promotions, and bus shelters, campuses and stadiums use them for information and advertising. Hotels and malls use them at entrances and on terraces. For complete signage projects that combine indoor and outdoor screens with content management, see Digital Signage & Video Walls. In the UAE, dust, humidity near the coast and summer heat all count, so the IP56 rating and the 50 °C upper limit are the first specifications to check.

Installation and planning

Outdoor displays are heavy and need a fixed structure: the 55-inch Samsung OHDX weighs 36.7 kg and is 69 mm deep, and the 55-inch LG 55XE3C-B weighs 70 kg. Before ordering, check:

  • Structure and wind: the wall, pole or totem must carry the display weight plus wind load.
  • Power and protection: a weatherproof power feed with earth and surge protection, sized for up to 580 W per screen.
  • Orientation: portrait or landscape as supported (the LG 55XE3P-B supports both), and the screen's direction to the sun.

For mounting hardware, the VSYS range covers wall and floor mounts. Outdoor installations need mounts and fixings rated for the display weight, wind and corrosion, so confirm the rating for the exact site before ordering.

Outdoor displays by brightness

The 55-inch models in this collection fall into three brightness groups.

  • 3,000 cd/m²: LG 55XE3C, IP56, 24-hour rated, with HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI inputs. Suited to shaded and window-facing positions.
  • 3,500 nit: Samsung OH55DX and LG 55XE3P-B, IP56 and IK10, rated 24/7. Suited to drive-thrus, fuel stations and street signage.
  • 4,000 cd/m²: LG 55XE4F-M, IP56 and IK10, visible through polarised sunglasses. LG lists it as discontinued, so it suits replacements in existing sites.

Applications and technical planning

  • Drive-thru menu boards

Drive-thru lanes use outdoor screens for menus and order confirmation in full sun. A 3,500 nit IP56 display such as the Samsung OH55DX or LG 55XE3P-B stays readable at midday, and a 24/7 rating covers restaurants that stay open through the night.

  • Freestanding outdoor totems

Campuses, hotel entrances and fuel stations use freestanding totems for wayfinding, prices and promotions. The display inside must be rated for the site: IP56 against dust and water, IK10 glass against knocks, and -30 °C to 50 °C operation for UAE summers.

  • Indoor signage alternatives

Where the screen is inside an air-conditioned mall or lobby, an indoor display of 350 to 700 nit is enough and costs less to run. Use outdoor models only for positions exposed to direct sun, rain or open air.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an outdoor display and an indoor signage screen?

An outdoor display is sealed against dust and water, protected by impact-rated glass and several times brighter than an indoor screen. The Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B are rated IP56 and IK10 and deliver 3,500 nit, while indoor signage screens are typically 350 to 700 nit with no water protection.

Outdoor models also manage heat with internal fans and sensors and are rated for -30 °C to 50 °C, against 0 °C to 40 °C for typical indoor screens. That is why an indoor screen fails quickly in UAE sun even inside a sealed box.

How bright does an outdoor display need to be for direct sunlight?

For screens in direct midday sun, choose about 3,500 nit or more; for shaded or window-facing positions, around 3,000 nit is usually enough. In this collection the LG 55XE3C-B is rated at 3,000 cd/m² through its glass, the Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B at 3,500 nit and the LG 55XE4F-M at 4,000 cd/m².

A brightness sensor lowers the output at night, which saves power and avoids glare. Check the minimum brightness too: LG states 2,800 nit minimum for the 55XE3P-B, which is the lowest brightness LG specifies for the model.

What does IP56 mean on an outdoor display?

IP56 means the display is protected against dust that could harm its operation (the 5) and against powerful water jets from any direction (the 6). It allows the screen to stand in rain, dust and wind without a separate enclosure.

The Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B, 55XE3C-B and 55XE4F-M are rated IP56. IP56 does not mean the screen can be submerged, so avoid locations where water pools at the base, and keep cable entries sealed during installation.

Can outdoor displays handle UAE summer heat?

Yes, within their rating. The Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B and 55XE3C-B are rated to operate from -30 °C to 50 °C, and they use internal fans and sensors to control panel temperature.

Because a screen in direct sun gets hotter than the surrounding air, site planning still matters in the UAE. Where possible face the screen north or east, avoid reflective walls behind it, keep the ventilation openings clear and choose a model rated for 24/7 operation, such as the Samsung OHDX or LG 55XE3P-B.

What does IK10 mean on outdoor display glass?

IK10 is the highest rating on the IK scale for impact resistance, showing the glass can withstand an impact energy of 20 joules. It protects the LCD panel from knocks, thrown objects and vandalism in public places.

In this collection the Samsung OHDX and LG 55XE3P-B and 55XE4F-M use IK10-rated front glass. The LG 55XE3P-B glass is 5 mm thick, tempered and chemically strengthened, which also helps reduce the need to replace the LCD module after an impact.

Can people wearing sunglasses read an outdoor display?

Yes on the LG 55XE4F-M, which uses a quarter wave plate (QWP) so the image stays visible to viewers wearing polarised sunglasses. Without such a layer, polarised sunglasses can make some LCD screens look dark at certain angles.

This matters for drive-thru menu boards and fuel station screens, where many drivers wear sunglasses. For other models, check the screen with polarised sunglasses in both portrait and landscape orientation before a large rollout.

How heavy is a 55-inch outdoor display and how is it mounted?

A 55-inch outdoor display weighs about 37 kg to 70 kg, much more than an indoor screen. The Samsung OHDX weighs 36.7 kg and is 69 mm deep, and the LG 55XE3C-B weighs 70 kg.

Mount it on a wall, pole or freestanding totem designed for that weight plus wind load, with corrosion-resistant fixings. The mounting must leave the display's ventilation openings clear. The LG 55XE3P-B supports portrait and landscape, so check the orientation support of the exact model before ordering the structure.

Do outdoor displays need a separate media player?

Not usually. The Samsung OHDX runs Samsung's Tizen platform with 8 GB of storage, and the LG 55XE3P-B runs webOS 6.1, which supports HTML apps and local content scheduling, so both can play scheduled content without a PC.

An external player can still connect where a third-party signage platform is used: the LG 55XE3C-B has HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI inputs, plus an SD card slot and USB 3.0. Keep any external player inside the weatherproof housing or in a nearby cabinet.

How much power does an outdoor display use?

A 55-inch outdoor display uses several hundred watts at full brightness, far more than an indoor screen. The LG 55XE3P-B is rated at 380 W typical and 430 W maximum, and the Samsung OHDX at 580 W in on mode.

Actual use is lower when the brightness sensor dims the screen at night. Plan a dedicated weatherproof circuit with earth and surge protection for each screen, and allow for the full rated power when sizing cables and breakers.

Can an outdoor display be placed behind a shop window instead of outside?

Yes. A window-facing position behind glass needs high brightness but not full weather protection, and around 3,000 nit, as on the LG 55XE3C-B, is usually enough to stay readable from the street.

Sun through glass still heats the screen, so leave an air gap between the display and the window and keep the room side ventilated. Indoor signage screens rated for 0 °C to 40 °C are not suitable for sun-facing windows, because the panel can overheat and darken.
