Self-service kiosks for ordering, payment and information

A self-service kiosk is a touch screen with a built-in computer, made for customers to order, pay, check in or find information without staff. This collection holds four kiosks: the 24-inch Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3 and the 27-inch LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C, all Full HD (1920 × 1080) with touch, and all able to add payment, printing and code scanning. They suit restaurants, cafes, shops, hotels and clinics.

Kiosks are designed for one person at a time standing at the screen. For group work, whiteboarding and presentations, an Interactive Panels display of 55 to 98 inches is the right format. For screens that only show menus or promotions without touch, see Digital Signage Displays.

How to choose a kiosk

Operating system: Tizen or Windows

The operating system decides which ordering or check-in software can run on the kiosk. The Samsung KM24A runs Samsung's Tizen 4.0 with 8 GB of storage and needs no external PC. The Samsung KM24C-3 runs Windows 10 IoT Enterprise with a 256 GB drive, and the LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C also run Windows, with the 27KC3PK-C using an Intel Celeron N5105 quad-core processor. Windows suits existing point-of-sale software; Tizen suits web-based ordering apps.

Screen and touch

The Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3 have a 24-inch capacitive touch screen rated at 250 cd/m² without glass. The LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C have a 27-inch in-cell touch screen at 300 nit with a 25% haze surface, which LG says reduces reflections in bright indoor spaces. The LG models are rated for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, and both LG models can be set up in portrait or landscape.

Payment, printing and scanning

Most kiosk projects need card payment, a receipt and a code scanner. Samsung's kiosk design supports credit card, barcode, QR code and NFC payment options and a built-in printer, with an integrated cradle for a Verifone P400 payment terminal on the KM24C-3 (availability varies by region). The LG 27KC3PK-C has a built-in receipt printer for 80 mm rolls and a 1D and 2D barcode and QR scanner, and supports IC chip and MST cards through a payment terminal from the local payment company.

Formats and accessibility

Counter-top, floor stand or wall

Kiosks come in several formats from the same screen. LG offers the 27KC3P-M as a touch computer on its own, on a counter-top stand, on a floor stand, on a back-to-back stand that serves two users from one footprint, or on the wall using standard VESA mounting. The Samsung KM24A can stand on a counter, on its floor stand or on the wall, with cables and the power strip hidden inside.

Accessibility

Public kiosks must be usable by everyone. The LG 27KC3PK-C has an audio navigation keypad and an embossed Braille guide, and LG offers a tactile keypad accessory for the 27KC3P-M, angled at 45 degrees, for people with visual impairments. Plan the screen height so that wheelchair users can reach the touch area and the payment terminal.

Where kiosks are used

Quick-service restaurants and cafes use kiosks for self-ordering, which shortens queues at the counter. Shops use them for product search and click-and-collect, hotels for self check-in, and clinics for patient registration. For complete retail and hospitality signage projects that combine kiosks with menu boards and video walls, see Digital Signage & Video Walls. These kiosks are indoor products rated for 0 °C to 40 °C (Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3); for exposed outdoor positions in the UAE, use a sealed high-brightness screen from Outdoor Displays.

Installation and planning

Kiosks are light compared with signage screens: the Samsung KM24A weighs 4.4 kg and the KM24C-3 4.3 kg, while the LG 27KC3PK-C weighs 14.2 kg without its cradle. Before ordering, check:

  • Payment provider: confirm which card terminal your bank or payment company supports, and that the kiosk has a cradle for it.
  • Software: confirm the ordering or check-in software runs on Tizen or Windows before choosing the model.
  • Power and network: a socket and a wired LAN point at each kiosk position; the KM24C-3 is rated at 88 W.

For wall installation of a kiosk screen on a VESA mount, the VSYS range covers wall brackets. Confirm the VESA pattern and weight of the chosen kiosk before ordering.

Kiosks by platform

The four kiosks fall into three groups.

  • Samsung 24-inch: Samsung KM24A with Tizen 4.0, and Samsung KM24C-3 with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. Compact kiosks for counters and narrow spaces.
  • LG modular 27-inch: LG 27KC3P-M, a Windows touch computer with counter-top, floor, back-to-back and wall options and add-on scanner and keypad.
  • LG self-ordering 27-inch: LG 27KC3PK-C, with built-in receipt printer, QR and barcode scanner, audio keypad and Braille guide.

Applications and technical planning

  • Restaurant self-ordering

Quick-service restaurants and cafes use kiosks so customers can order and pay without queuing at the counter. A self-ordering kiosk such as the LG 27KC3PK-C combines a 27-inch touch screen, receipt printer and QR scanner in one unit.

  • Group touch screens

Where several people need to work at the screen together, such as in classrooms and meeting rooms, an interactive panel of 55 to 98 inches with 20 to 50 touch points is the better format than a single-user kiosk.

  • Menu boards above the counter

Kiosks usually work together with menu boards above the counter. Non-touch signage screens of 43 to 55 inches show the menu and promotions to customers waiting in line or ordering at the kiosks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a self-service kiosk?

A self-service kiosk is a touch screen with a built-in computer that lets customers order, pay, check in or find information without staff. The kiosks in this collection, the Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3 and the LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C, are Full HD touch screens of 24 or 27 inches.

They can add a card payment terminal, a receipt printer and a QR or barcode scanner, and they run Tizen or Windows. That makes them suitable for restaurants, shops, hotels and clinics where customers serve themselves.

Should I choose a Tizen or a Windows kiosk?

Choose Windows if your ordering or point-of-sale software runs on Windows, and Tizen if it is a web-based app. The Samsung KM24C-3 runs Windows 10 IoT Enterprise with a 256 GB drive, and the LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C also run Windows.

The Samsung KM24A runs Tizen 4.0 with 8 GB of storage and needs no external PC, which keeps it simple and compact. Ask your software provider which platform their kiosk app supports before choosing the hardware.

Can customers pay by card on these kiosks?

Yes, with a payment terminal approved by your bank or payment company. Samsung's kiosk design supports credit card, barcode, QR code and NFC payment options, and the KM24C-3 has an integrated cradle for a Verifone P400 terminal in some regions.

The LG 27KC3PK-C supports IC chip and MST cards, barcodes and QR codes; LG notes that an EMV terminal from the local payment company is required for card payments. In the UAE, confirm the terminal model with your acquiring bank before ordering the kiosk.

Do these kiosks have a built-in receipt printer?

Some do. The LG 27KC3PK-C has a built-in thermal receipt printer for 3-inch (80 mm) rolls and a drawer-type front, so staff can change paper and service the printer without opening the body.

Samsung's kiosk design also includes a built-in printer as part of its modular options. The LG 27KC3P-M is a modular design where a printer, scanner and keypad are added as needed; check the exact configuration ordered, because peripherals vary between versions.

How bright are kiosk screens and can they be used outdoors?

Kiosk screens are made for indoor use and are much less bright than outdoor displays. The Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3 are rated at 250 cd/m² without glass, and the LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C at 300 nit.

The Samsung kiosks are rated for 0 °C to 40 °C, so they belong in air-conditioned spaces, away from direct sun through glass. For outdoor ordering points such as drive-thrus, use a sealed high-brightness outdoor display of 3,000 nit or more instead.

Can a kiosk be mounted on the wall instead of a floor stand?

Yes, on the models here. LG offers the 27KC3P-M as a touch computer on its own, on a counter-top stand, on a floor stand, on a back-to-back stand or on the wall using standard VESA mounting. The Samsung KM24A can be placed on a counter, on a floor stand or on the wall.

Wall mounting saves floor space in narrow shops and corridors. Check that the wall can carry the kiosk weight, from 4.3 kg for the Samsung KM24C-3 to 14.2 kg for the LG 27KC3PK-C, and plan power and LAN inside the wall.

Are these kiosks accessible for people with disabilities?

The LG models have dedicated accessibility features. The LG 27KC3PK-C has an audio navigation keypad and an embossed Braille guide, and LG offers a tactile keypad accessory for the 27KC3P-M, angled at 45 degrees, which LG designed to meet accessibility standards such as the US ADA.

For any kiosk, plan the screen and payment terminal height so that wheelchair users can reach them, and choose software with large touch targets and audio guidance.

Can kiosk screens be used in portrait orientation?

Yes. The LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C can be set up in portrait or landscape, and LG supplies stands for both orientations. Portrait is the usual choice for ordering kiosks because a tall screen fits a full menu without scrolling.

The Samsung KM24A and KM24C-3 are designed as portrait kiosks on their stands. Design the ordering app for the chosen orientation from the start, because changing it later means redesigning every screen.

How long can a kiosk run each day?

The LG 27KC3P-M and 27KC3PK-C are rated for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, and LG gives the panel a minimum life of 31,000 hours. That covers most restaurants and shops open from morning until late evening.

For sites that are open around the clock, such as hospitals or airports, ask for a model rated for 24/7 operation or plan a nightly sleep schedule. The Samsung KM24A uses 0.5 W in sleep mode, so scheduled sleep costs very little power.

How much power and network does a kiosk need?

A kiosk needs a standard socket and a network connection. The Samsung KM24A is rated at 49.5 W and the Samsung KM24C-3 at 88 W in on mode, so one circuit can serve several kiosks.

Use a wired LAN connection where possible, because orders and card payments need a stable link to the point-of-sale system and the payment provider. Plan the socket and LAN point inside the stand or wall at each kiosk position before the floor or wall is finished.
