LED-backlit commercial displays for signage

The displays in this collection are commercial LCD screens lit by LED backlights, built for menu boards, information screens and promotional signage that run for long hours. They range from the 10.1-inch Samsung DB10E-POE to the 105-inch Samsung QM-D, with Full HD or 4K UHD resolution and 350 nit to 700 nit brightness. Samsung makes 23 of the 25 models, and LG makes the other two.

"LED display" here means an LCD panel with an LED backlight, not a direct-view LED wall built from LED modules. Many listed models, such as the Samsung DB-E, DC-E, DM-E and QM-F series, are earlier generations kept for matching or replacing existing screens. For the current range of single screens, see Digital Signage Displays; to tile panels into one large image, see Video Wall Displays.

How to choose an LED-backlit display

Edge-lit or direct-lit backlight

An edge-lit display places the LEDs along the frame, which keeps it thin and light: the 43-inch Samsung PM43F is 29.9 mm deep and weighs 9.4 kg, and the 75-inch Samsung QB75N is 60.4 mm deep. A direct-lit display places the LEDs behind the whole panel, which gives more even brightness across large screens; the LG 55LV77A uses a direct LED backlight. Model names in this collection often say "Edge-Lit" or "Direct-Lit".

Brightness and screen size

Match brightness to the light in the space. The Samsung QB75N is rated at 350 nit for offices and shops with controlled lighting, the Samsung PM43F at 500 nit for brighter retail and restaurant counters, and the LG 55LV77A at 700 cd/m² for lobbies with daylight. For screens in direct sun, outdoor models are needed instead. Choose 4K UHD, as on the 3840 × 2160 Samsung QB75N, when viewers stand close to a 65-inch or larger screen.

Bezel width and tiling

The frame width decides whether screens can sit side by side. The Samsung QB75N has a 13.5 mm bezel, suited to a single screen. The Samsung PM43F has a 6.9 mm bezel on top and sides and supports video wall layouts of up to 15 × 15 screens through its settings, with DisplayPort 1.2 daisy chaining. The LG 55LV77A is a dedicated video wall panel with a 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel gap and is rated for 24/7 operation.

Players, inputs and control

Built-in media player

Most Samsung models here run signage content without an external PC. The Samsung PM43F and QB75N have Samsung's built-in player and work with MagicInfo, Samsung's content management software, so playlists and schedules can be sent over the network. The PM43F and QB75N also have built-in Wi-Fi, and the PM43F has 2 × 10 W speakers, which suit menu boards with music or video sound.

Inputs, daisy chain and remote control

The Samsung QB75N has 2 HDMI inputs, 1 DVI-D input, 2 USB ports, RS232C in and out and an RJ45 LAN port. The Samsung PM43F adds a DisplayPort input and a DisplayPort 1.2 loop-out to pass the signal to the next screen. RS232C and LAN let a control system or signage software switch screens on and off, change inputs and check status remotely.

Where LED-backlit displays are used

Restaurants and cafes use 43-inch to 55-inch screens as menu boards, often in rows of two or three. Airports, metro stations and malls use them for departures, wayfinding and advertising, where Samsung rates the QB75N and PM43F as IP5x dust-protected; see Digital Signage & Video Walls for complete projects. These are indoor displays rated for 0 °C to 40 °C, so in the UAE they belong in air-conditioned spaces. For shopfronts and outdoor kiosks in direct sun, choose a high-brightness model from Outdoor Displays.

Installation and planning

Mounting patterns differ by size: the 43-inch Samsung PM43F uses a 200 × 200 mm VESA pattern, the LG 55LV77A uses 600 × 400 mm and weighs 23.2 kg, and the 75-inch Samsung QB75N uses 400 × 400 mm and weighs 38.0 kg. Before ordering, check:

  • Orientation: the Samsung PM43F supports portrait use; check the manual of other models before planning a portrait screen.
  • Power and heat: plan for up to 154 W for the PM43F and 220 W for the QB75N, with ventilation space behind the screen.
  • Network: a LAN point or Wi-Fi coverage for content updates and remote control.

For wall, ceiling and floor mounting, the VSYS range covers commercial displays of these sizes. The 75-inch Samsung QB75N (38.0 kg, VESA 400 × 400 mm) and 43-inch Samsung PM43F (9.4 kg, VESA 200 × 200 mm) both fit the VSYS VS01A-46F fixed mount, rated for 37 to 86 inches, 80 kg and VESA patterns up to 600 × 400 mm.

LED-backlit displays by size

The listed models fall into three size groups.

  • Compact, 10 to 43 inches: Samsung DB10E-POE for shelves and room signs, and Samsung PM43F, 500 nit, for menu boards and counters.
  • Mid size, 48 to 65 inches: Samsung DB-E, DC-E and DM-E series, and the LG 55LV77A, 700 cd/m², for lobbies and tiled walls.
  • Large format, 75 to 105 inches: Samsung QB75N, 4K UHD, and the Samsung QM-D 105-inch 5K UHD display for wide reception walls.

Applications and technical planning

  • Restaurant menu boards

Restaurants and cafes mount two or three 43-inch to 55-inch screens above the counter to show menus, prices and promotions that change through the day. A 500 nit model with built-in speakers and a media player, such as the Samsung PM43F, runs scheduled content without a separate PC.

  • Transport and mall information

Airports, metro stations and malls use signage displays for departures, wayfinding and advertising. IP5x dust protection, as on the Samsung QB75N and PM43F, helps where dust is common, and network control lets one operator manage every screen from a central point.

  • Tiled lobby walls

Lobbies that need a larger image than one screen can tile narrow-bezel panels. The LG 55LV77A has a 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel gap, 700 cd/m² brightness and a 24/7 rating, and uses a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern for video wall mounting.

Frequently asked questions

Is an LED display the same as a direct-view LED video wall?

No. The displays in this collection are LCD screens with an LED backlight, while a direct-view LED wall is built from LED modules where each LED is a pixel. LED-backlit LCDs, such as the Samsung QB75N and PM43F, are single screens with a fixed size and resolution and a visible frame.

Direct-view LED walls can be built to any size without seams, but they are a different product type. For a large image from LCD panels, tile narrow-bezel video wall panels such as the LG 55LV77A, which has a 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel gap.

What is the difference between edge-lit and direct-lit LED displays?

An edge-lit display has LEDs along the frame that light the panel from the sides, and a direct-lit display has LEDs spread behind the whole panel. Edge-lit screens are thinner and lighter: the 43-inch Samsung PM43F is 29.9 mm deep and weighs 9.4 kg.

Direct-lit screens give more even brightness across large panels and are common on video wall panels, such as the direct LED LG 55LV77A. Both types use the same LCD technology, so resolution and image quality depend on the panel, not only on the backlight.

How many nits does an indoor display need for shops, restaurants and lobbies?

Use about 350 nit for offices and shops with controlled lighting, 500 nit for bright retail and restaurant counters, and 700 nit for lobbies and windows with daylight. In this collection the Samsung QB75N is rated at 350 nit, the Samsung PM43F at 500 nit and the LG 55LV77A at 700 cd/m².

Higher brightness uses more power and is only needed where ambient light is strong. For screens that face direct sun through a shopfront or outdoors, an outdoor or high-brightness display is required instead of an indoor model.

Do these displays need a separate media player or PC?

Most Samsung models in this collection do not, because they have a built-in media player. The Samsung PM43F and QB75N work with MagicInfo, Samsung's signage software, to play scheduled content from USB or over the network, and both have built-in Wi-Fi.

An external player or PC is still useful for interactive content, third-party signage platforms or sources such as live TV. The Samsung QB75N accepts these through 2 HDMI inputs and 1 DVI-D input, and the PM43F adds a DisplayPort input.

Can LED-backlit displays be used as a menu board in a restaurant?

Yes. Menu boards are one of the main uses for these displays, usually 43-inch to 55-inch screens mounted in a row above the counter. The Samsung PM43F suits this well: it is rated at 500 nit, has 2 × 10 W speakers and can be mounted in portrait or landscape.

For a row of screens, choose the same model for every position so colour and brightness match, and use the built-in player and network scheduling to change menus by time of day. Keep the screens away from direct heat from grills and ovens.

Can several displays be joined together as a video wall?

Some can. The Samsung PM43F supports video wall layouts of up to 15 × 15 screens through its settings and passes the signal along with a DisplayPort 1.2 loop-out. Its bezel is 6.9 mm on the top and sides, so the seams are visible.

For a wall where seams should be as thin as possible, use dedicated video wall panels such as the LG 55LV77A, with a 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel gap and 24/7 rating, or the panels in the Video Wall Displays collection. Standard signage screens like the 13.5 mm bezel Samsung QB75N suit single-screen use.

Are these LED displays suitable for 24/7 operation?

Only some are: LG rates the 55LV77A for 24/7 operation, so check the rated operating hours of the exact model before planning continuous use. Other models in this collection are rated for shorter daily hours or have ratings that vary by series and generation.

For continuous use, also keep the room within the rated 0 °C to 40 °C operating range and leave the ventilation space the manual requires, because heat shortens the life of the backlight and the electronics.

What VESA mount do I need for a 43, 55 or 75-inch signage display?

The VESA pattern depends on the model, not only the size. In this collection the 43-inch Samsung PM43F uses 200 × 200 mm, the 55-inch LG 55LV77A uses 600 × 400 mm, and the 75-inch Samsung QB75N uses 400 × 400 mm.

Choose a mount that lists the exact pattern and is rated above the display weight: 9.4 kg for the PM43F, 23.2 kg for the LG 55LV77A and 38.0 kg for the QB75N. For portrait installation, check that both the display and the mount support it.

Can these displays be installed near a shopfront window in the UAE?

Only if the screen is shaded from direct sun, because these are indoor displays rated for 0 °C to 40 °C. Sunlight through glass raises the panel temperature and makes a 350 nit or 500 nit screen hard to read, which is a common problem in UAE shopfronts.

For window-facing positions, choose a high-brightness or outdoor display designed for sunlight. Indoor screens such as the Samsung QB75N and PM43F are IP5x dust-protected, which helps in malls and stations, but that rating does not cover water, heat or direct sun.

How are signage displays controlled and monitored over a network?

They are controlled over RS232C or an RJ45 LAN port, which lets a control system or signage software switch them on and off, change inputs and check their status. The Samsung QB75N and PM43F have RS232C in and out and an RJ45 port.

With the LAN connection, MagicInfo can also send content and schedules to each Samsung screen. Plan a wired LAN point behind each display where possible, because Wi-Fi is less reliable for large content updates in busy commercial buildings.
