Projection screens for meeting rooms, classrooms and events

A projection screen is the surface that turns a projector's light into a sharp, even picture, and its size, format, gain and mounting decide how the image looks from every seat. This collection holds Da-Lite ceiling-recessed, wall and ceiling electric, manual, fixed-frame and portable folding screens, from the 50 × 67-inch Slimline Electrol to the 203 × 360-inch Studio Electrol, plus VSYS fixed-frame and electric screens of 100 to 150 inches diagonal and Da-Lite frame accessories.

The screen is planned together with the projector. Compare brightness, resolution and throw distance in Projectors, then size the screen for the farthest viewer. In rooms with strong daylight, or where the image must stay bright with the lights on, the direct-view panels in LED Displays are the alternative to projection.

How to choose a projection screen

Size and format

Match the screen format to the projector: 16:9 for HD and 4K content, 16:10 for many business projectors, and 4:3 or square for older sources. Da-Lite builds the Tensioned Advantage in 16:9 sizes from 45 × 80 inches to 146 × 260 inches, plus 16:10 and 4:3 formats. VSYS screens are 16:9: the VSPS100-M gives a 2.21 × 1.24 m image, the PEGA 120 and VSPS120-M 2.65 × 1.49 m, the VSPS135-M 3.00 × 1.68 m and the PEGA 150 3.32 × 1.87 m.

Gain and viewing angle

Gain is how much light a surface reflects toward the audience compared with a matte white reference of 1.0, and a higher gain usually narrows the viewing angle. VSYS matte white screens have gain 1.0 and a 160° viewing angle, and the VSYS PEGA 150 has gain 1.1 and 140°. Da-Lite's HD Rental surface for the Fast-Fold Deluxe has gain 1.0 with an 85° half angle, and Da-Tex rear projection has gain 1.3 with a 30° half angle.

Recessed, electric, fixed or portable

A ceiling-recessed electric screen disappears into the ceiling when not in use. Da-Lite designs the Tensioned Advantage with its own ceiling trim, so the case can be installed during rough-in and the screen surface during finishing. Wall or ceiling electric screens, such as the Da-Lite Cosmopolitan and VSYS VSPS series, hang below the ceiling; fixed-frame screens stay down permanently; and Fast-Fold screens fold into a wheeled case for events.

Surface flatness and control

Tensioning and surface quality

Roll-up screens can wave at the edges, which shows as distortion on text and straight lines. Da-Lite's tensioned screens use the TruGuide tensioning system and Smooth Roll technology to keep the surface flat, a standard black backing to hold brightness on front projection surfaces, and seamless surfaces in all models. Fixed-frame screens such as the VSYS PEGA series keep the fabric taut on an aluminium frame.

Control and power

Electric screens are lowered by a wall switch, a remote or the room control system. The Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage comes with a Low Voltage Control and a three-button wall switch, with optional RF or infrared remotes, and its case is UL plenum rated. VSYS VSPS screens use a tubular motor with an RF remote and a hardwired wall keypad, carry CE, UKCA and RoHS certification, and offer an optional synchronised motor that matches drop timing across several screens. Confirm the motor voltage for UAE 230 V supply before ordering.

Where projection screens are used

Boardrooms and training rooms use ceiling-recessed or wall-mounted electric screens, so the wall can serve other uses when the projector is off; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. Schools and universities fit large electric and fixed-frame screens in classrooms and lecture halls; see Education & Training Spaces. Hotels and event companies set up Fast-Fold screens with drapery in ballrooms. Many UAE meeting rooms have glazed walls, so plan blinds or a higher-brightness projector where daylight falls on the screen.

Installation and planning

A screen and projector are installed as one system, aligned so the image fills the screen without keystone correction. Before ordering, check:

  • Image size: the screen width that suits the room and the distance to the farthest viewer.
  • Ceiling: space above the ceiling tiles for a recessed case, or a fixing structure for a surface case.
  • Projector position: throw distance and mount location from the projector's lens data.

For the projector itself, ceiling and wall mounts from the VSYS range carry 20 kg or 35 kg, and are listed in Projector Mounts.

Projection screens by type

The screens in this collection fall into three groups by how they are installed.

CorporateAV.ae is a supplier of genuine Da-Lite products in the UAE and supplies the VSYS screen range. Use Request a Project Quote with the room size, projector model and how the screen will be mounted.

Applications and technical planning

  • Boardroom projection

Boardrooms use ceiling-recessed or wall-mounted electric screens, so the wall stays free when the projector is off. Tensioned surfaces keep text sharp for presentations.

Frequently asked questions

What size projection screen do I need?

Size the screen for the room and the farthest viewer, then match its format to the projector. VSYS 16:9 screens come in 100, 120, 135 and 150 inches diagonal, such as the PEGA 150 with a 3.32 × 1.87 m image.

Da-Lite builds the Tensioned Advantage in 16:9 sizes from 45 × 80 inches to 146 × 260 inches, as well as in 16:10 and 4:3, for boardrooms up to large lecture halls.

What does screen gain mean?

Gain is how much light a screen reflects toward the audience compared with a matte white reference of 1.0. A higher gain looks brighter on axis but usually narrows the viewing angle.

VSYS matte white screens have gain 1.0 with a 160° viewing angle, the VSYS PEGA 150 has gain 1.1 with 140°, and Da-Lite's Da-Tex rear projection surface has gain 1.3 with a 30° half angle.

What is a ceiling-recessed projection screen?

A ceiling-recessed screen sits in a case above the ceiling, so only a slot is visible when the screen is up. The Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage includes its own ceiling trim to hide the rough opening, and its case is UL plenum rated.

It can be installed in two stages: the case during rough-in construction and the screen surface during finishing, which suits new fit-outs.

Why choose a tensioned projection screen?

A tensioned screen holds the surface flat, so straight lines and text do not ripple at the edges. Da-Lite's tensioned screens use the TruGuide tensioning system and Smooth Roll technology for a flat surface, with a black backing on front projection surfaces.

This matters most for high-resolution projectors, spreadsheets and fine text. Fixed-frame screens such as the VSYS PEGA series keep the fabric taut on a frame instead.

How are electric projection screens controlled?

By a wall switch, a remote or a room control system. The Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage comes with a Low Voltage Control and a three-button wall switch, with optional RF or infrared remotes.

VSYS VSPS100-M, VSPS120-M and VSPS135-M screens use a tubular motor with an RF remote and a hardwired wall keypad, with an optional synchronised motor that lowers several screens together. Check the motor voltage for 230 V supply in the UAE before ordering.

What is a Fast-Fold projection screen?

A Fast-Fold screen is a portable folding frame with a snap-on surface and legs, set up for events and packed into a wheeled case. The Da-Lite Fast-Fold Deluxe frame and legs are 1.25-inch aluminium tubing, with a 5-year warranty.

Standard 16:9 sizes run up to a 90.5 × 162.5-inch viewing area, and the Heavy Duty Fast-Fold Deluxe goes up to a 15 × 26.5-foot viewing area.

Can a projection screen be used for rear projection?

Yes, with a rear projection surface and a frame. Da-Lite offers its Da-Tex surface for rear projection on Fast-Fold Deluxe screens, with gain 1.3 and a 30° half angle, and Dual Vision for front or rear use with gain 0.9 and a 65° half angle.

Rear projection hides the projector behind the screen, which suits stages and exhibitions with space behind.

What is the difference between a fixed-frame and an electric screen?

A fixed-frame screen is always down, with the surface stretched on a frame for a flat image, which suits dedicated presentation rooms and home cinemas. An electric screen rolls up into a case when not in use.

The VSYS PEGA 120 and PEGA 135 fixed-frame screens use matte white fabric with gain 1.0, and the VSYS VSPS electric screens come in 100, 120 and 135 inches, with images from 2.21 × 1.24 m to 3.00 × 1.68 m, gain 1.0 and a 160° viewing angle.

Do I need a black drop on a projection screen?

A black drop is the black border above the image that positions the picture at the right height below the case. Da-Lite fits 12 inches of black drop as standard on Tensioned Advantage screens, except the Parallax Pure surface, which has 2 inches.

Specify extra drop where the ceiling is high, so the image sits at a comfortable viewing height.

What information is needed to choose a projection screen?

Five facts decide the screen: the room size and farthest viewing distance; the projector's format and brightness; how the screen will be installed (recessed, wall, ceiling, fixed or portable); the light in the room; and the ceiling construction for recessed cases.

With these, the size, gain and type can be matched, for example a Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage 121 × 216-inch recessed screen for a large boardroom.
