Projectors for meeting rooms, classrooms and large venues

A projector creates a large image on a screen or wall from a single unit, which makes it the most economical way to show a 100-inch to 300-inch picture. This collection holds 174 LG and Sony projectors: LG ProBeam laser installation projectors and CineBeam home and portable models, and Sony 3LCD installation projectors, Sony SXRD 4K projectors from 1,500 to 10,000 lumens and the 18,000-lumen Sony SRX-T615 for cinemas.

The projector is chosen with its screen. Size and surface are compared in Projection Screens. Where the room is too bright for projection or the image must work with the lights fully on, the direct-view walls in LED Displays are the alternative.

How to choose a projector

Brightness

Brightness in lumens decides how large the image can be and how much room light it can stand. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 gives 6,000 lm for meeting rooms and classrooms, the LG ProBeam BU70QGA 7,000 ANSI lumens for lobbies and halls, and the Sony VPL-FHZ131L 13,000 lm for auditoriums. The Sony VPL-GTZ380 reaches 10,000 lm with a 16,000:1 contrast ratio for simulation and premium cinema rooms. Sony also quotes a centre figure: 6,500 lm for the VPL-PHZ60 and 13,600 lm for the VPL-FHZ131L, so compare the standard rating with the standard rating between brands.

Resolution

Match the resolution to the content and the viewing distance. Business installation models such as the Sony VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L are WUXGA, 1920 × 1200 pixels in a 16:10 format suited to computer content. The LG BU70QGA projects 4K UHD at 3840 × 2160, and the Sony VPL-GTZ380 shows true 4K at 4096 × 2160 without pixel shifting.

Lens, throw and image alignment

The throw ratio sets how far back the projector must sit for a given image width. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 has a 1.6x zoom with a throw ratio of 1.23 to 1.97 and lens shift of -35% to +55% vertically and ±15% horizontally. The LG BU70QGA has a motorised 1.6x zoom, a throw ratio of 1.53 to 2.45 and lens shift of +60% / -33% vertically and ±28% horizontally, plus 25-point keystone adjustment and 4 to 25-point warping.

Light source, connectivity and control

Laser or lamp light source

Laser projectors need no lamp changes. LG rates the BU70QGA laser for up to 20,000 hours, and the Sony VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L use laser diodes. The collection also lists Sony lamp-based 3LCD models, many of them earlier generations kept for replacing or extending existing installations; check the model number of installed projectors before ordering.

Inputs and control

Installation projectors receive video over a single long cable and join the room control system. The LG BU70QGA and Sony VPL-PHZ60 have HDBaseT and RS-232C control, and the BU70QGA runs webOS Signage 6.0 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The Sony VPL-FHZ131L accepts interchangeable lenses and an optional 3G-SDI input adaptor for broadcast and staging feeds.

Where projectors are used

Boardrooms and training rooms use 5,000 to 7,000-lumen laser projectors with a ceiling-recessed or electric screen; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. Universities and schools use them in lecture halls and classrooms; see Education & Training Spaces. Museums, malls and event spaces in the UAE blend several projectors into one panoramic image; LG supports edge blending on the ProBeam BU70QGA. In rooms with large windows, plan blinds or a higher brightness, because daylight lowers projected contrast. Home cinemas and private screening rooms use the Sony SXRD and LG CineBeam 4K models listed below.

Installation and planning

A projector is planned from the screen: image size first, then throw distance, then the mounting point. Before ordering, check:

  • Throw distance: the distance from lens to screen for the chosen model and zoom setting.
  • Brightness for the room: image size, room light and the screen surface's gain.
  • Signal and control: HDBaseT, HDMI or SDI runs and the control system protocol.

For ceiling or wall mounting, VSYS projector mounts carry 20 kg or 35 kg with tilt, swivel and 360° rotation; see Projector Mounts. Heavier venue projectors, such as the 51 kg Sony VPL-GTZ380, need a mounting frame rated by the installer. Leave the ventilation clearance the manual specifies around the projector, and plan safe access to the lens and air filter for service, especially above seating.

Projectors by application

The projectors in this collection fall into three groups by where they are used.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens does a meeting room projector need?

Most meeting rooms and classrooms use 5,000 to 7,000 lumens, enough for a large image with the lights partly on. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 gives 6,000 lm and the LG ProBeam BU70QGA 7,000 ANSI lumens.

Auditoriums and large halls need more, such as the 13,000 lm Sony VPL-FHZ131L. The screen size, room light and screen gain all change the brightness needed.

What is the difference between WUXGA and 4K projectors?

WUXGA is 1920 × 1200 pixels in a 16:10 format, which matches most laptop and computer content; the Sony VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L are WUXGA. 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 pixels, used by the LG ProBeam BU70QGA, and the Sony VPL-GTZ380 shows full 4096 × 2160.

Choose 4K for fine detail on very large screens or close viewing, and WUXGA for presentations and video conferencing content.

What does throw ratio mean?

Throw ratio is the distance from the lens to the screen divided by the image width. With a ratio of 2.0, a 3 m wide image needs the projector 6 m away.

The Sony VPL-PHZ60 zooms from 1.23 to 1.97 and the LG ProBeam BU70QGA from 1.53 to 2.45, so both can be placed at a range of distances. Large venue models such as the Sony VPL-FHZ131L take interchangeable lenses for very short or long throws.

What is lens shift on a projector?

Lens shift moves the image up, down or sideways without moving the projector or distorting the picture. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 shifts -35% to +55% vertically and ±15% horizontally, and the LG ProBeam BU70QGA shifts +60% / -33% vertically and ±28% horizontally.

It lets the projector hang off-centre, for example to avoid a ceiling beam, while the image stays square.

How long does a laser projector light source last?

LG rates the laser light source of the ProBeam BU70QGA for up to 20,000 hours, and laser models need no lamp replacement.

At 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 20,000 hours is roughly 9 to 10 years of use. Sony's VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L also use laser diode light sources; filters still need periodic cleaning or replacement according to the manual.

Can several projectors make one large image?

Yes, with edge blending, which overlaps the images and smooths the brightness in the overlap so the joins disappear. LG supports edge blending on the ProBeam BU70QGA.

Sony describes the VPL-GTZ380's SXRD panels as reducing visible banding when several images are edge-blended. Blended projection suits museums, immersive rooms and panoramic screens wider than one projector can fill.

What is HDBaseT on a projector?

HDBaseT carries video, audio, control and network over one RJ45 cable, so a ceiling projector needs only one cable from the room's switcher. The Sony VPL-PHZ60's HDBaseT port carries video, audio, LAN and RS-232C.

The LG ProBeam BU70QGA also has HDBaseT, plus RS-232C and two RJ45 network ports for room control.

Are the Sony projectors in this collection current models?

Not all of them. Sony lists models such as the VPL-PHZ60 and VPL-FHZ131L as discontinued, and the collection includes earlier Sony lamp-based 3LCD models that are kept for replacing or extending existing installations.

Check the model number of installed projectors before ordering a like-for-like replacement, and ask for the current equivalent for new rooms.

How heavy are installation projectors?

Weights vary widely. The Sony VPL-PHZ60 weighs about 7 kg and the LG ProBeam BU70QGA 17.7 kg, both within the 35 kg rating of VSYS VPM-20 series ceiling mounts.

Large venue models are much heavier: the Sony VPL-FHZ131L weighs about 27 kg and the Sony VPL-GTZ380 about 51 kg without lens, which needs a rigging frame rated by the installer.

What information is needed to choose a projector?

Five facts decide the projector: the screen size and format; the distance from the planned mounting point to the screen; the room light; the content, such as presentations or 4K video; and the signal and control system.

With these, brightness, resolution, lens and connectivity can be matched, for example a 6,000 lm WUXGA Sony VPL-PHZ60 with HDBaseT for a 120-inch boardroom screen.
