Overview

What is the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM is a digital wireless handheld transmitter without a mute switch that takes any compatible Sennheiser or Neumann microphone capsule and works with Evolution Wireless Digital receivers. It offers 1.9 ms latency, a 134 dB dynamic range and up to 12 hours of runtime, which suits presenters, singers and event teams across UAE conference venues, ballrooms and places of worship that already run an EW-DX receiver.

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM is the transmitter body of an Evolution Wireless Digital handheld microphone. It is delivered without a capsule, so the buyer chooses the microphone module that suits the voice or room. A persistent E-Ink display, function buttons, a digital trim and a switchable low cut let the user set the transmitter without a receiver at hand. The SKM-S version of this transmitter adds a programmable mute switch.

Why this product

Key Benefits

  • Choose your own capsule

The Sennheiser standard capsule interface takes 14 listed modules, from the MMD 835-1 cardioid dynamic to the supercardioid MMD 945-1 and the Neumann KK 204 and KK 205 condenser modules.

  • Low-latency digital audio

The Sennheiser Performance Audio Codec (SePAC) gives 1.9 ms system latency and a 134 dB dynamic range, so the gain of the transmitter does not have to be adjusted.

  • Always-on E-Ink display

Frequency, battery status and encryption status stay visible on screen even when the batteries are removed.

  • Settings on the handheld

Function buttons, digital audio trim, a test tone generator, a switchable LED and a low cut (off, 30, 60, 80, 100 or 120 Hz) are set directly on the transmitter, and the buttons can be locked.

  • Rechargeable or AA power

A BA 70 pack gives up to 12 hours and charges in the transmitter through its charging contacts in the CHG 70N-C, while two AA batteries are included for up to 8 hours.

  • Metal housing

The rugged metal body is made for handling on stage and in rental use.

Use cases

Applications

  • Conferences and panel discussions

A handheld transmitter that takes any listed capsule suits moderators and presenters who pass the microphone around.

  • Hotel ballrooms and corporate events

The 10 mW transmitter works at up to 100 m, enough for large function rooms.

  • Places of worship and live vocals

Swap in a supercardioid or condenser capsule to match the singer or speaker.

  • Rental and replacement use

Replace or add a handheld in an existing EW-DX system on the same frequency range.

Expert FAQs

What pickup pattern does the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM use?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM has no fixed pickup pattern because it is delivered without a microphone capsule. The pattern comes from the module fitted to its standard capsule interface, for example cardioid with the MMD 835-1, supercardioid with the MMD 945-1 or the MME 865-1, and switchable cardioid and supercardioid with the MMK 965-1, all sold separately.

Which frequency range of the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM should I order for the UAE?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM is listed here in two frequency ranges: Q1-9 (470.2 to 550 MHz, article no. 509426) and R1-9 (520 to 607.8 MHz, article no. 509427). Sennheiser states that specific frequencies are subject to local RF regulations, and its International Frequency Advisor (SIFA) lists the ranges allowed per country, so confirm the range for your venue before ordering and match it with every transmitter and receiver in the system.

Does the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM include a microphone capsule?

No, the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM is delivered without a capsule. The box holds the transmitter, an MZQ 1 microphone clamp, 2 AA batteries and the guides. It accepts 14 listed modules, including the MMD 835-1, MMD 845-1, MME 865-1, MMD 935-1, MMD 945-1, MMK 965-1, MMD 42-1, Neumann KK 204 and KK 205, MM 435, MM 445 and the ME 9002, ME 9004 and ME 9005.

How long does the battery last in the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM runs for up to 12 hours on a BA 70 lithium-ion battery pack and up to 8 hours on two AA 1.5 V alkaline batteries. Two AA batteries are included, while the BA 70 is sold separately. The pack can charge inside the transmitter through its charging contacts in the CHG 70N-C network-enabled charger, or on the L 70 USB charger.

What is the wireless range of the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM transmits at 10 mW ERP with a working range of up to 100 m (328 ft). Longer runs depend on the receiver antennas, for which Sennheiser offers antenna boosters such as the EW-D AB (Q) and EW-D AB (R). Bluetooth Low Energy for the Smart Assist App works in the 2402 to 2480 MHz band.

Which receivers work with the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM works with Evolution Wireless Digital receivers such as the EW-DX EM 2, EW-DX EM 2 DANTE and EW-DX EM 4 DANTE, provided the frequency range (Q1-9 or R1-9) matches. Each receiver channel is linked to one transmitter, and up to 146 channels in Standard Mode or 293 in Link Density Mode can run within an 88 MHz switching bandwidth.

What is the difference between the Sennheiser EW-DX SKM and the SKM-S?

The Sennheiser EW-DX SKM has no mute switch, while the EW-DX SKM-S adds a programmable mute switch that can mute the audio or the radio signal. Both share the same standard capsule interface, E-Ink display, 10 mW transmitter, 1.9 ms latency and 12 hour BA 70 runtime, and both fit the same receivers.
