Projector mounts for ceilings and walls

A projector mount holds a projector at a fixed throw distance and angle from the screen, on the ceiling or on the wall above it, with tilt, swivel and rotation to square the image. This collection has four VSYS ceiling and universal mounts, three of them rated 20 kg or 35 kg, and three ViewSonic mounts designed for specific ViewSonic projector models, including two wall arms for short-throw installation.

Start with the projector and the screen, because the throw distance decides where the mount goes and how long its pole or arm must be. Compare projectors by brightness, resolution and throw ratio in Projectors, and size the image surface in Projection Screens. Then choose a mount whose load rating, drop or extension and fixing type fit that position.

How to choose a projector mount

Load rating

The mount must carry the projector's weight with a margin, including any lens. The VSYS VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H are rated for 35 kg, which covers large installation projectors, and the VSYS VPM-2G for 20 kg. ViewSonic rates the PJ-WMK-007 ceiling mount for 55 lb (about 25 kg) and the PJ-WMK-305 wall mount for 33 lb (about 15 kg). Check the projector's weight in its own datasheet.

Drop and extension

Ceiling height and lens position decide how far the projector must hang. The VSYS VPM-20-02L telescopes from 735 mm to 1135 mm, the VSYS VPM-2G extends from 430 mm to 650 mm, and the VSYS VPM-20H head drops from 130 mm to 470 mm. The ViewSonic PJ-WMK-007 arm adjusts from 19.7 in to 30.7 in, about 500 mm to 780 mm.

Short-throw and wall mounting

Short-throw and ultra short-throw projectors sit close to the screen, often on the wall above it, so they need a wall arm with fine reach adjustment instead of a ceiling pole. The ViewSonic PJ-WMK-304 adjusts its arm from 365 mm to 635 mm, and the ViewSonic PJ-WMK-305 from 26 in to 50 in. ViewSonic states that its mount kits support only the ViewSonic projector models it designates for them, so they are not universal brackets.

Adjustment, fixing and cable routing

Tilt, swivel and rotation

After the projector is hung, the image is squared with the mount rather than with keystone correction, which keeps full resolution. The VSYS VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H tilt from +20° to -20°, swivel ±8° and rotate through 360°, and the VSYS VPM-2G tilts ±15° and swivels ±8°. A detachable interface plate on the VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H lets the projector come down for service and go back without re-aiming.

Ceiling fixing and cables

The VSYS VPM-20H fixes to a flat or pitched ceiling with a 150 × 120 mm plate and also has a 1.5-inch North American standard pipe thread. The VSYS VPM-20-02L fixes with a 220 × 140 mm ceiling plate on a 42 mm pole, and the VSYS VPM-2G uses the same base plate on a solid wall or a ceiling. All three route cables inside the pole, head or column, which keeps HDMI, HDBaseT and power runs out of sight.

Where projector mounts are used

Classrooms and training rooms often use short-throw projectors on wall arms above a whiteboard, so presenters do not walk through the beam; see Education & Training Spaces. Boardrooms and meeting rooms use ceiling mounts with a projector centred on a recessed or fixed-frame screen; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. Auditoriums and ballrooms need long drops and heavier ratings for installation projectors. In the UAE, many offices have deep false ceilings for air conditioning ducts, so measure from the structural slab, not from the ceiling tile, when choosing the pole length.

Installation and planning

A projector mount is planned from the screen backwards: image size, then throw distance, then the lens height that centres the image. Before installation, check:

  • Throw position: the distance from screen to lens for the chosen projector and image width.
  • Structure: the slab or wall can carry the mount and projector, with fixings to suit.
  • Cables and access: signal and power routes to the mount, and a way to reach the projector for service.

For ceiling and wall projector mounting, the VSYS range covers fixed-pole, telescopic and universal interface mounts, and the same range includes the projection screens that pair with them. VSYS rates the VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H for projectors up to 35 kg and the VPM-2G up to 20 kg, and the detachable plate on the first two bolts to the projector first, so it can be aligned on the bench.

Projector mounts by installation type

The mounts in this collection fall into three groups by how they fix and what they carry.

  • Heavy-duty ceiling, 35 kg: VSYS VPM-20-02L, telescopic from 735 mm to 1135 mm with ±20° tilt and 360° rotation, and VSYS VPM-20H, with a 130 mm to 470 mm drop, a quick-release head and a 1.5-inch pipe thread.
  • Standard ceiling or wall: VSYS VPM-2G, rated 20 kg, extending from 430 mm to 650 mm with ±15° tilt, and the VSYS VPM-2-100 height-adjustable ceiling mount.
  • ViewSonic projector kits: ViewSonic PJ-WMK-007 ceiling mount and the PJ-WMK-304 and PJ-WMK-305 short-throw wall arms, for the ViewSonic models listed by ViewSonic.

Applications and technical planning

  • Classroom short-throw projection

Short-throw projectors on wall arms above the board keep the beam out of the presenter's eyes. Match the arm reach to the projector's throw distance and check that the arm is listed for the projector model.

  • Boardroom ceiling projection

Boardrooms often centre a ceiling-mounted projector on a fixed-frame or electric screen. Size the screen first, then set the mount position and pole length from the projector's throw distance.

  • Heavy installation projectors

Large venue projectors with interchangeable lenses need a 35 kg class mount with fine adjustment. The VSYS VPM-20-02L telescopes from 735 mm to 1135 mm and rotates 360° for precise image alignment.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a projector ceiling mount hold?

Projector ceiling mounts in this collection hold 20 kg to 35 kg: the VSYS VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H are rated for 35 kg and the VSYS VPM-2G for 20 kg. ViewSonic rates its PJ-WMK-007 ceiling mount for 55 lb, about 25 kg.

Use the projector's weight from its own datasheet, including any optional lens, and keep it below the mount's rating. Large installation projectors with interchangeable lenses usually need a 35 kg class mount.

How do I choose the right pole length for a projector mount?

Choose the pole length from the lens height the projector needs to centre the image on the screen, measured down from the structural ceiling. The VSYS VPM-20-02L telescopes from 735 mm to 1135 mm and the VSYS VPM-2G extends from 430 mm to 650 mm.

In rooms with a false ceiling, add the void between the slab and the ceiling tile, since the mount fixes to the slab and the projector hangs below the tile.

Can a projector be mounted on a wall instead of the ceiling?

Yes. The VSYS VPM-2G is specified for solid wall or ceiling mounting, and ViewSonic makes wall arms for its short-throw projectors: the PJ-WMK-304 with an arm of 365 mm to 635 mm and the PJ-WMK-305 with an arm of 26 in to 50 in, rated for 33 lb.

Wall mounting suits short-throw projectors placed above a whiteboard or screen. Long-throw projectors normally go on the ceiling, further back in the room.

Do ViewSonic projector mounts fit other projector brands?

No. ViewSonic states that its wall and ceiling mount kits support only ViewSonic projectors, and only the specific models it designates for each kit. For example, the PJ-WMK-304 is listed for models including the PX800HD, PS700X, PS750W and LS830.

For other projector brands, use a universal mount such as the VSYS VPM-20H or VPM-20-02L, both rated for projectors up to 35 kg, and check the projector's mounting hole positions against the interface plate.

How is the projected image squared after mounting?

The image is squared by adjusting the mount's tilt, swivel and rotation until the picture sits straight on the screen. The VSYS VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H tilt from +20° to -20°, swivel ±8° and rotate 360°, and the VSYS VPM-2G tilts ±15° and swivels ±8°.

Squaring the image with the mount, rather than with digital keystone correction, keeps the projector's full native resolution.

What is the VSYS VPM-20H used for?

The VSYS VPM-20H is a heavy-duty universal ceiling mount for projectors up to 35 kg. It fixes to a flat or pitched ceiling with a 150 × 120 mm plate and also has a 1.5-inch North American standard pipe thread.

Its head drops from 130 mm to 470 mm, tilts from +20° to -20°, swivels ±8° and rotates 360°, and its detachable interface plate bolts to the projector first, so the projector can be aligned on the bench and clicked onto the head.

Can the projector be removed for service without re-aligning it?

Yes, with a mount that has a detachable interface plate. On the VSYS VPM-20-02L and VPM-20H, the plate stays on the projector and unlocks from the mount head, so the projector can be taken down and refitted at the same angle.

ViewSonic includes a quick-release connector on the PJ-WMK-007 for the same purpose. This saves time when lamps, filters or the projector itself are serviced.

How are cables hidden on a projector ceiling mount?

On the VSYS VPM-20-02L, cables run inside the pole and through the head, and on the VSYS VPM-20H they run through the mount body. This keeps HDMI, HDBaseT and power cables out of sight between the ceiling and the projector.

Plan the cable entry point in the ceiling above the mount, and leave a service loop so the projector can be lowered without disconnecting it.

Which projector mount suits a classroom short-throw projector?

A wall arm mounted above the board suits most short-throw classroom projectors, because the projector sits close to the screen and out of the presenter's way. ViewSonic's PJ-WMK-305 is listed for models including the PS501X, PS600W and LS620X, with an arm of 26 in to 50 in.

Measure the throw distance the projector needs for the board width, then check that the arm's reach range covers it.

What information is needed to choose a projector mount?

Five facts decide the mount: the projector model and its weight; the screen size and the throw distance that follows from it; the ceiling height and the depth of any false ceiling; the ceiling or wall construction; and the cable route.

With these, the load rating, pole or arm length and fixing type can be chosen, for example a 35 kg VSYS VPM-20-02L telescoping from 735 mm to 1135 mm under a deep ceiling void.
