KEF speakers and audio systems for the UAE

KEF is a British loudspeaker maker, and this collection lists 81 KEF products: 33 Ci in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, 25 passive hi-fi and home cinema speakers, 7 wireless and active speakers, 12 subwoofers and 4 amplifier and installation accessories. One brand therefore covers a flush-mounted meeting room, a hotel lounge, a private cinema and a hi-fi listening room.

Passive speakers need a separate amplifier, while the wireless and active models carry their own. To compare other flush-mount brands, see Ceiling & Wall-Mount Speakers; for the amplifiers that drive passive models, see Power Amplifiers; for added bass, see Subwoofers.

How to choose a KEF product

Ci architectural speakers

The Ci range is built into the ceiling or wall and runs from the 3 in KEF Ci100.2QR to the 10 in KEF Ci250RRm-THX. KEF lists the KEF Ci130QS from 45 Hz and the KEF Ci200QL from 35 Hz, so a larger driver reaches lower without a subwoofer. The KEF Ci3160RLM-THX is a multi-driver in-wall model with THX Ultra certification.

Passive and wireless speakers

The Q, R and Reference series and the Blade and LS50 Meta speakers are passive and need an amplifier. The KEF Q7 Meta floorstanding speaker covers 39 Hz to 20 kHz (-6 dB) at 87 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω, while the KEF Blade One Meta covers 27 Hz to 45 kHz (-6 dB) and KEF recommends 50 to 400 W. For a multichannel system, the KEF Q6 Meta is a centre channel and the KEF Q8 Meta is a Dolby Atmos surround speaker.

The wireless and active models are different: the KEF LSX II, KEF LS50 Wireless II, KEF LS60 Wireless and KEF Coda W have the amplifiers built in, so they need only a source and power. The KEF XIO is a 5.1.2 channel soundbar with Dolby Atmos, and the KEF Muo is a portable Bluetooth speaker rated IP67.

Subwoofers and amplifiers

The KEF Kube 10 MIE covers 24 Hz to 140 Hz with a 300 W RMS amplifier, the KEF KC92 covers 11 Hz to 200 Hz with 1000 W RMS, and the KEF Reference 8b lists 18 Hz (-6 dB). For built-in bass, the KEF Ci200QSB-THX mounts in the wall or ceiling and runs from the KEF KASA500 amplifier in active mode.

Installation topics

KEF publishes the cut-out size and mounting depth for each Ci model. The KEF Ci100QS needs a 112 × 112 mm cut-out, the KEF Ci200QS needs 238 × 238 mm, and the KEF Ci160TS is 41 mm deep for shallow ceiling voids. Check the void behind the board before ordering.

KEF lists optional rough-in frames and rear enclosures for several Ci models, which help when the speaker is installed before the ceiling or wall is finished. The KEF KW1 kit links the KC62, KC92 and Kube subwoofers wirelessly over up to 100 ft in line of sight.

Where KEF speakers are used

Flush Ci speakers keep meeting rooms, reception areas, hotel suites and restaurants free of visible hardware. Passive and wireless models suit private cinemas and listening rooms, and the KEF Ventura 6 is an all-weather outdoor speaker for terraces and gardens. See Loudspeakers for other brands.

Planning and ordering

Before quoting, confirm these three points with the consultant or contractor:

  • Passive or active: passive models need an amplifier channel rated for 4 Ω, 6 Ω or 8 Ω, while active models need only power and a source.
  • Position: ceiling, wall, floor or outdoor, and the cut-out size where the speaker is built in.
  • Bass: whether a subwoofer is needed and whether it connects by cable or by the KW1 wireless kit.

Frequently asked questions

What KEF products does CorporateAV.ae supply?

CorporateAV.ae is a supplier of genuine KEF products in the UAE, and this collection lists 81 of them. They are 33 Ci in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, 25 passive hi-fi and home cinema speakers, 7 wireless and active speakers, 12 subwoofers and 4 amplifier and installation accessories. The range includes the Q, R, Reference, Blade, LS50 Meta, T series and Ventura speakers, the LSX II and LS50 Wireless II systems and the XIO soundbar.

Which KEF speakers need a separate amplifier?

The Ci, Q, R, Reference, Blade, LS50 Meta, T series and Ventura speakers are passive, so they need an external amplifier. KEF lists the recommended amplifier power on each product page, for example 15 to 200 W for the KEF Q7 Meta at 4 Ω and 10 to 125 W for the KEF Ventura 6 at 6 Ω. Match the amplifier channel to the speaker impedance and the power range before ordering.

Which KEF speakers have built-in amplifiers?

The KEF LSX II, LS50 Wireless II, LS60 Wireless, Coda W and LS LUXE speakers have amplifiers built in, as do the KEF XIO soundbar and the KEF Muo portable speaker. They need only a source and power. For example, KEF lists 70 W (LF) and 30 W (HF) Class D amplification per speaker for the LSX II and Coda W, and 280 W (LF) and 100 W (HF) for the LS50 Wireless II.

Which KEF subwoofers are available?

This collection lists 12 KEF subwoofers. The Kube 8, 10, 12 and 15 MIE, KC92, K62 Twin, K62 Dual and Reference 8b are powered subwoofers with built-in amplifiers, for example 300 W RMS in the Kube 10 and 1000 W RMS in the KC92. The Ci200QSB-THX, Ci200TRB, Ci250RRB-THX and Ci3160RLB-THX are built into the wall or ceiling and use the KEF KASA500 amplifier in active mode.

What cut-out does a KEF Ci in-ceiling speaker need?

The cut-out depends on the model, and KEF publishes it on each product page. The KEF Ci100QS needs 112 × 112 mm, the KEF Ci130QS needs 158 × 158 mm and the KEF Ci200QS needs 238 × 238 mm. The KEF Ci160TS is only 41 mm deep and needs a 194 × 194 mm cut-out. Check the ceiling thickness range and the mounting depth against the void before ordering.

What is the difference between KEF Ci in-ceiling and in-wall models?

In-ceiling models such as the KEF Ci200QS are round or square and sit flush in the ceiling, while in-wall models such as the KEF Ci200QL are rectangular and mount in a wall. The in-wall cut-out is larger, 334 × 238 mm for the Ci200QL and KEF lists 35 Hz for the Ci200QL against 45 Hz for the Ci200QS. Both are passive speakers rated at 8 Ω, so each needs an external amplifier channel that suits that load.

Which KEF models are THX certified?

KEF lists THX certification for the Ci models with THX in the name. The Ci160RR-THX, Ci250RRm-THX, Ci3160REFM-THX, Ci3160RLM-THX and Ci5160RLM-THX are THX Certified Ultra, the Ci3120QLM-THX is THX Certified Select and the Ci5160REFM-THX is THX Certified Dominus. The Ci250RRB-THX in-ceiling subwoofer is also THX Certified Ultra. Ultra covers the 6.5 in Ci160RR-THX, the 10 in Ci250RRm-THX and the in-wall Meta and Reference models, and each product page shows the level as KEF lists it.

Which KEF speaker suits a shallow ceiling?

The KEF Ci160TS is a thin in-ceiling speaker, 41 mm deep with a 4.5 in driver and a 194 × 194 mm cut-out. The KEF Ci160TR is 40 mm deep with a round 196 mm cut-out, and the KEF Ci200TRB thin subwoofer is 63 mm deep. KEF publishes the mounting depth on each product page, so compare it with the ceiling void before ordering.

Can KEF subwoofers connect wirelessly?

Yes, the KEF KW1 TX/RX kit links the KC62, KC92 and Kube subwoofers wirelessly. KEF lists 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz radio, 24 bit and 48 kHz sampling, latency under 17 ms and a link distance of up to 100 ft in line of sight. KEF lists an expansion port for the KW1 on the Kube and KC92 subwoofers, and the kit is sold separately.

Which KEF speakers suit outdoor or portable use?

The KEF Ventura 6 is a 6.5 in all-weather outdoor speaker with a frequency response of 54 Hz to 20 kHz (±6 dB) at 6 Ω, and it needs an amplifier. The KEF Muo is a portable Bluetooth speaker with an IP67 dust and water rating, an operating temperature of -20°C to 45°C and up to 24 hours of battery playtime at moderate volume. Check the product page for the exact ratings.
