Video wall displays for lobbies, control rooms and retail

A video wall display is a commercial LCD panel built to be tiled with identical panels into one large image, typically in 2 × 2, 3 × 3 or wider layouts. It has a much narrower frame than a standard signage screen, mounting points for close alignment, and settings that split one picture across many panels. This collection covers Full HD (1920 × 1080) Samsung and LG video wall panels in 46, 49 and 55 inches, plus one Prestigio video wall trolley.

Current Samsung VM and VH series and LG VL, VM and VSH series panels are listed alongside older models that are still needed to extend or repair existing walls. If one screen is enough for the space, compare Digital Signage Displays; if the aim is one very large image without seams, the 75-inch to 98-inch screens in LED & Large Format Displays can replace a small wall.

How to choose a video wall panel

Bezel-to-bezel gap

The bezel-to-bezel figure is the width of the black line where two panels meet, and it is the most visible difference between models. In this collection it ranges from 0.88 mm to about 3.5 mm (see the panel groups below). A narrow gap matters most for small text, spreadsheets and dashboards viewed from a few metres; for video and large graphics seen from further away, a 3.5 mm gap is often enough.

Brightness and screen finish

The listed panels are rated at 500 nit or 700 nit typical brightness. In a lobby or showroom with daylight, 700 nit holds contrast better; in a control room with managed lighting, 500 nit is usually enough and uses less power: the 500 nit Samsung VM55B-U is rated at 220 W against 250 W for the 700 nit Samsung VH55B-E. The Samsung VMB-U and LG 55VSH7J-H use anti-glare surfaces with 25% and 28% haze to reduce reflections from ceiling lights.

Colour uniformity and calibration

Small differences in colour and brightness between panels are easy to see once they sit side by side, so matching is part of commissioning. LG provides Smart Calibration on the 55VSH7J-H, which can re-run automatically at set intervals. Samsung factory-tunes the VHB-E series for uniformity and offers Color Expert Pro Mobile to adjust white balance on walls of up to 3 × 3 panels with a phone camera. Plan calibration after installation and after any panel replacement.

Sources, daisy chaining and control

Daisy chain or external video wall processor

Many listed panels can split one source across the wall without a separate controller. The Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E series accept HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and DVI and daisy chain over DisplayPort or HDMI; the LG 55VSH7J-H has a DisplayPort output and a built-in Tile Mode under webOS 4.1. An external video wall processor is the better choice when the wall must show several sources at once or move windows freely.

Control and monitoring

The Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E series and the LG 55VSH7J-H have RS232C and RJ45 (LAN) control ports, and the LG 55VSH7J-H can control, monitor and update the firmware of several panels through a LAN daisy chain. Decide early whether the wall will run from a room control system, the panel's own software or a signage platform.

Where video walls are used

Control rooms and security operations centres use video walls to keep camera feeds, maps and dashboards in view of several operators, where narrow seams and 24/7 operation matter most; see Control Rooms & Command Centers. Corporate lobbies, showrooms and malls use them for brand and promotional content at a scale one screen cannot reach; see Digital Signage & Video Walls. These are indoor panels: the Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E and LG 55VL5F-A and 55VSH7J-H are rated for 0 °C to 40 °C, so in the UAE they belong in air-conditioned space, away from sun-facing glass.

Installation, mounting and service

A video wall is only as even as its mounting. The 55-inch Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E and LG 55VL5F-A and 55VSH7J-H use a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern, weigh 18.4 kg to 21.2 kg and are 70.4 mm to 93.1 mm deep. Before ordering, check:

  • Structure: the wall or floor must carry the full array weight plus the mounts.
  • Service access: pop-out video wall mounts let one panel come out from the front without disturbing its neighbours.
  • Power and heat: plan circuits and ventilation for 210 W to 250 W per panel on the Samsung VMB-U, VHB-E and LG 55VSH7J-H.

For mounting, the VSYS VSVW02-46T pop-out video wall mount takes 37-inch to 70-inch screens up to 45 kg with VESA patterns up to 600 × 400 mm, so it fits the 55-inch panels above. It sits 68 mm to 215 mm from the wall, has ±3° levelling, pops out for service and works in portrait or landscape. For larger screens, the VSYS VSVW13-610T takes up to 110 inches and 130 kg, and the full VSYS range covers wall, floor and trolley mounting. Check portrait support in the panel manual before planning a portrait wall.

Video wall panels by bezel width

The main 55-inch panels in this collection fall into three bezel groups, all Full HD.

  • 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel: Samsung VM55B-U and LG 55VL5F-A, 500 nit, rated 24/7. Suited to video and large graphics.
  • 1.74 mm bezel-to-bezel: Samsung VH55B-E, 700 nit, rated 24/7. Suited to bright lobbies and mixed content.
  • 0.44 mm bezel per edge: LG 55VSH7J-H (0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel, 24/7) and Samsung VH55C-R, 700 nit. Suited to fine text and dashboards.

Applications and technical planning

  • Corporate lobby walls

Lobby and reception walls show brand content to visitors at a scale one screen cannot reach. Daylight from glazed entrances often makes 700 nit panels such as the Samsung VH55B-E or LG 55VSH7J-H the safer choice, and a 3 × 3 or 4 × 2 layout of 55-inch panels is a common size for a reception wall.

  • Control room information

Control rooms and security operations centres keep camera feeds, maps and dashboards on the wall around the clock. Narrow seams matter here because operators read small text, which favours panels such as the 0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel LG 55VSH7J-H, rated for 24/7 operation.

  • Serviceable display arrays

A wall is easier to maintain when each panel can come out from the front. The VSYS VSVW02-46T pop-out mount takes screens up to 70 inches and 45 kg on the common 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern, so a single panel can be replaced and the wall recalibrated without dismantling the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a video wall display and a normal commercial screen?

A video wall display is designed to be tiled with identical panels into one image, while a normal commercial screen is designed to be viewed on its own. Video wall panels have a much narrower frame, such as the 3.5 mm bezel-to-bezel gap of the Samsung VMB-U series or 0.88 mm on the LG 55VSH7J-H, compared with a far wider frame on standard signage screens.

They also add tiling features: settings that assign each panel its part of the picture, daisy-chain outputs to pass the signal along, and colour calibration tools to match neighbouring panels.

What does bezel-to-bezel mean on a video wall?

Bezel-to-bezel is the total width of the black seam where two panels meet, which is the frame of one panel plus the frame of its neighbour. It is the figure to compare between models, because a single-edge bezel figure is roughly half of it.

For example, the LG 55VSH7J-H has a 0.44 mm bezel on each edge and a 0.88 mm bezel-to-bezel seam. The Samsung VH55B-E has a 1.74 mm seam, and the Samsung VM55B-U and LG 55VL5F-A have about 3.5 mm.

How do I show one image across the whole video wall?

There are two ways: daisy chain the panels and let their built-in tiling split the image, or feed the wall from an external video wall processor. The Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E series can daisy chain over DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI, and the LG 55VSH7J-H has a DisplayPort output and a Tile Mode setting.

Daisy chaining suits one source shown across the whole wall. An external processor is the better choice when the wall must show several sources at the same time, place windows freely or switch between many inputs.

Should I choose a 500 nit or a 700 nit video wall?

Choose 700 nit for bright spaces such as lobbies, showrooms and malls with daylight, and 500 nit for rooms with controlled lighting such as control rooms and meeting spaces. In this collection, the Samsung VM55B-U and LG 55VL5F-A are 500 nit panels, and the Samsung VH55B-E, Samsung VH55C-R and LG 55VSH7J-H are 700 nit panels.

The brighter panels use more power: the 500 nit Samsung VM55B-U is rated at 220 W and the 700 nit Samsung VH55B-E at 250 W per panel. Video wall panels are indoor products, so neither brightness level makes them suitable for direct sunlight.

How are colour and brightness matched across video wall panels?

Panels are matched by calibration during commissioning, using the manufacturer's tools. The LG 55VSH7J-H has Smart Calibration, which can run automatically at set intervals. Samsung factory-tunes the VHB-E series for uniformity and provides Color Expert Pro Mobile, which adjusts white balance on walls of up to 3 × 3 panels using a phone camera.

Calibrate after installation, once the panels have warmed up, and again whenever a panel is replaced, because a new panel may not match older panels that have been running for some time.

Can video wall panels be installed in portrait orientation?

Some can. The LG 55VL5F-A and LG 55VSH7J-H support both portrait and landscape installation, and the 55VSH7J-H has a dedicated portrait on-screen menu. For other models, check the installation manual before designing a portrait wall, because orientation affects ventilation and is not supported by every panel.

The mount must also be rated for portrait use. Portrait walls are common for retail and lobby content, where a tall image fits the space better.

Can video wall displays run 24 hours a day?

Yes, if the model is rated for it. The Samsung VMB-U and VHB-E series and the LG 55VL5F-A and 55VSH7J-H are rated by their manufacturers for 24/7 operation. Some older models in the collection have different ratings, so check the specification of the exact model before planning continuous use.

For continuous operation, also keep the room within the rated 0 °C to 40 °C range and leave the ventilation space the manual requires, as heat is the main stress on a wall that never switches off.

What mounting and service access does a video wall need?

A video wall needs a dedicated mount that aligns panels precisely and lets each panel come out for service. The 55-inch Samsung VMB-U, Samsung VHB-E, LG 55VL5F-A and LG 55VSH7J-H use a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern and weigh 18.4 kg to 21.2 kg.

The VSYS VSVW02-46T pop-out mount fits them: it takes 37-inch to 70-inch screens up to 45 kg, sits 68 mm to 215 mm from the wall and is tested to 4 times its rated load.

Can one panel in an existing video wall be replaced with a different model?

Replace a panel with the same model where possible, because a different model can have a different bezel width, brightness, colour and depth, and the difference shows in a tiled wall. If the original model is no longer made, choose a replacement with the same diagonal, bezel-to-bezel gap and VESA pattern, then recalibrate the whole wall.

This collection includes some older Samsung and LG models for extending or repairing existing walls. Check the model number on the back of the installed panels before ordering.

What information is needed to design a video wall?

A video wall design starts with five facts: the layout and size, such as 3 × 3 panels of 55 inches; the closest viewing distance; the content and how many sources show at once; the daily operating hours; and the lighting and temperature of the room.

With those, the panel model, bezel width, brightness, processor and mount can be chosen together. Add the wall construction and whether there is rear access, since these decide the mount type and how panels will be serviced.
