How to plan an audio system

Speakers for the space

Start with the room. Offices, shops and hotels usually use many small speakers on 70 V or 100 V lines, such as Bose DesignMax and JBL Control models in Ceiling & Wall-Mount Speakers. Ballrooms and auditoriums use column speakers such as the JBL CBT 70J-1 or line arrays such as the d&b Y8 (139 dB), and music events add subwoofers that reach 30 to 45 Hz.

Microphones for the users

Presenters and performers use handheld, lavalier or headset wireless microphones, from the analog Shure BLX (up to 14 hours on two AA batteries) to digital SLX-D+, ULX-D and Axient Digital with AES-256 encryption. Meeting rooms use ceiling arrays, table microphones or Microflex Wireless systems linked to the conferencing system; see Ceiling & Conference Microphones.

Amplification, processing and control

Between microphones and speakers sit the mixer, the processor and the amplifiers. A DSP such as the Bose ControlSpace EX-1280C adds 12 echo-cancelling channels and 64 × 64 Dante for meeting rooms, and amplifiers range from the PoE+ powered Shure MXN-AMP (14.5 W) to the d&b D80 (4 × 4,000 W into 4 Ω). Browse Power Amplifiers and Audio Processors, and add Bose ControlCenter wall plates for local volume and source control.

Networks and standards

Dante and networked audio

Many products here carry audio over the network. Shure ULX-D and Axient Digital receivers, Bose ControlSpace EX processors, Bose PowerShare amplifiers and the Yealink AP08 support Dante, and d&b D40 and D90 amplifiers accept Milan network audio. A network design lets microphones, processors and amplifiers share audio over standard Ethernet switches instead of separate analog cables.

70 V / 100 V and low-impedance systems

Distributed systems run many speakers from one amplifier channel through transformer taps, while venue systems run full-range cabinets and subwoofers at 4 to 12 Ω. Bose PowerShare and PowerShareX amplifiers can switch each channel between the two, and most Bose and JBL ceiling speakers offer both a transformer and a low-impedance bypass.

Where professional audio is used

CorporateAV.ae supplies audio for boardrooms and meeting rooms, training rooms and auditoriums, hotels, ballrooms and conference centres, restaurants and retail, places of worship, and live events. Meeting rooms combine microphones, a conferencing processor and ceiling speakers; venues combine wireless microphones, a mixer and line arrays or columns; commercial spaces combine background music, paging and wall controls. Portable events use powered speakers such as the JBL PRX915 (1,000 W RMS, 133 dB) and Electro-Voice ELX200-12P (1,200 W, 130 dB), which set up without an amplifier rack. For complete room solutions, see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. In the UAE, outdoor terraces, pools and beach venues need weather-rated speakers such as the IP55 Bose ArenaMatch Utility and IP56 JBL AWC ranges.

Installation and planning

A good audio system is planned from the room outwards. Before requesting a quote, gather:

  • Room facts: floor plan, ceiling height and type, and whether the space is indoor or outdoor.
  • Use: speech, background music, live music or video calls, and how many microphones are needed at once.
  • Infrastructure: rack space, network switches with PoE, cable routes and mains power.

Speaker brackets, flying frames and cases come from the speaker maker; VSYS, CorporateAV.ae's own mounting brand, covers displays, projectors and AV equipment. Shure wireless systems also need a frequency band chosen for the place of use. Before handover, test every microphone and zone together and record the settings.

Frequently asked questions

What does a professional audio system include?

A professional audio system has four parts: microphones and sources, a mixer or processor, amplifiers, and loudspeakers. Meeting rooms add echo cancellation, and commercial spaces add wall controls for each zone.

For example, a meeting room might use ceiling microphones, a Bose ControlSpace EX-1280C processor with 12 echo-cancelling channels, a Shure MXN-AMP PoE+ amplifier and ceiling speakers, while a ballroom uses wireless microphones, a mixer, amplifiers and line arrays or columns.

Which audio brands does CorporateAV.ae supply?

This collection covers Shure, JBL Professional, d&b audiotechnik, Bose Professional and Electro-Voice. Shure makes up more than half of the 2,319 products, from wireless microphone systems to conferencing microphones and spare parts.

CorporateAV.ae is an authorised dealer of Shure in the UAE, and a supplier of genuine JBL Professional, d&b audiotechnik, Bose Professional and Electro-Voice products.

Should I use ceiling speakers or loudspeaker cabinets?

Use ceiling speakers for even background music and speech across offices, shops, hotels and meeting rooms, usually on 70 V or 100 V lines. Use cabinets, columns or line arrays for ballrooms, auditoriums and events that need higher levels and controlled coverage.

For example, a Bose DesignMax DM6C ceiling speaker covers 120° with taps up to 80 W, while a d&b Y8 line array module reaches 139 dB for large venues.

What is Dante and why does it matter for audio systems?

Dante is a networked audio standard that carries many audio channels over a normal Ethernet network, so microphones, processors and amplifiers connect through network switches instead of separate analog cables.

In this range, Shure ULX-D and Axient Digital receivers, Bose ControlSpace EX processors, Bose PowerShare amplifiers and the Yealink AP08 support Dante. The Bose EX-1280C handles 64 Dante inputs and 64 outputs.

What is a 70V or 100V speaker system?

A 70 V or 100 V system runs many speakers in parallel on one amplifier channel, with a transformer tap on each speaker setting its level. It suits offices, retail, hotels and other spaces with many ceiling speakers.

Bose DesignMax and JBL Control ceiling speakers offer taps such as 2.5 W to 80 W at 70 V, and Bose PowerShare amplifiers switch each channel between 70 V / 100 V and 4 to 8 Ω operation.

Which wireless microphone system suits presentations?

For occasional presentations, a Shure BLX system gives up to 14 hours on two AA batteries and up to 12 systems per frequency band. For daily use and confidential meetings, Shure SLX-D+ adds AES-256 encryption and up to 8 hours per charge or battery set.

Larger venues with many channels use ULX-D or Axient Digital receivers with Dante. Choose the frequency band for the country of use with Shure's Wireless Frequency Finder.

Do I need an audio processor for a meeting room?

A meeting room with video calls needs acoustic echo cancellation on every microphone, which comes from a conferencing processor or from the microphone system itself.

The Bose ControlSpace EX-440C has 8 echo cancellers and the EX-1280C has 12, both with USB, VoIP and Dante. The Yealink AP08 has 8 AEC channels and powers up to 3 audio devices with PoE+.

Which speakers can be used outdoors in the UAE?

Use speakers rated for outdoor exposure. The Bose ArenaMatch Utility AMU208 is rated IP55, Bose ArenaMatch AM10, AM20 and AM40 modules are rated for direct-exposure outdoor installation, and the JBL AWC129 is rated IP56.

For bass outdoors, the Bose MB210-WR subwoofer is rated IP55. For coastal and pool areas, also plan for sun, humidity and salt air at cable entries and brackets.

How much amplifier power does an audio system need?

Add up the loudspeaker load per channel: the transformer taps on each 70 V or 100 V line, or the power rating of each low-impedance cabinet, and choose channels rated above that total.

Amplifiers here range from the PoE+ Shure MXN-AMP at 14.5 W for meeting rooms, through the Bose PowerShare PS604D with 600 W shared over 4 channels, to the d&b D80 at 4 × 4,000 W into 4 Ω for large venues.

What information is needed to design an audio system?

An audio design starts with the floor plan, ceiling height and type, and whether the space is indoor or outdoor, plus the use: speech, background music, live music or video calls.

Add the number of microphones used at once, the number of zones that need separate levels, the call platform for meeting rooms, and the available rack space, network ports with PoE and mains circuits. With these, speakers, microphones, processing and amplifiers can be chosen together.
