Frequently asked questions
What do I need for a home cinema system?
A home cinema system needs a screen or projector, an AV receiver, speakers for the chosen layout (for example 5.1, 7.2 or Dolby Atmos 7.2.4) and at least one subwoofer, plus HDMI sources such as a streaming player.
What does 7.2.4 mean in home cinema?
7.2.4 means seven ear-level speakers, two subwoofers and four height speakers. It needs an AV receiver that processes 11 channels, plus enough amplification for each speaker.
What is Dolby Atmos?
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound format that adds height channels, so sound can come from above as well as around you. It needs an Atmos-capable AV receiver and in-ceiling or Atmos-enabled speakers.
How many channels does my AV receiver need?
A 5.1 system needs 5 amplified channels and a subwoofer output, 7.2 needs 7, 5.1.2 needs 7 and 7.2.4 needs 11 channels of processing. Denon receivers range from 5.2-channel models to the 15.4-channel AVC-A1H.
Which speakers are used for home cinema ceilings?
In-ceiling speakers such as the KEF Ci series are used for surround and Dolby Atmos height channels. The right model depends on the cut-out size, available ceiling depth and room size.
Can in-wall speakers sound as good as floorstanding speakers?
Well designed in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, such as KEF models with the Uni-Q driver, give clear, wide sound while staying hidden. Floorstanding speakers usually go deeper in the bass, so in-wall systems are paired with a subwoofer.
How many subwoofers does a home cinema need?
One subwoofer works in small rooms. Two subwoofers placed apart give more even bass at every seat and are recommended for dedicated cinema rooms.
How far should I sit from the screen?
For an immersive 4K picture, a common guide is to sit at roughly 1 to 1.5 times the screen width. A 3 m wide screen suits a seating distance of about 3 to 4.5 m.
What is room calibration and why does it matter?
Room calibration uses a microphone at the listening positions to measure the room, then sets speaker distances, levels and equalisation automatically. Many Denon receivers include Audyssey calibration for this.
Can I play music in every room with the same system?
Yes. Denon HEOS lets supported receivers, amplifiers and wireless speakers play music in several rooms from one app, and many models also support AirPlay 2.
