What is a commercial sound system?
A commercial sound system plays music and announcements through many speakers spread across a building. It has four parts: sources (music player, streaming, microphones for paging), a mixer or audio processor that routes each source to each zone, amplifiers, and speakers in the ceiling, on walls or outdoors.
Each area, such as a shop floor, restaurant, terrace or fitting rooms, is a zone with its own volume and music, set from a wall controller. Commercial speakers are built to run all day and are often wired on a 70 V or 100 V line, so many speakers can share one amplifier channel over long cable runs.

What is the best speaker type for a shop or restaurant?
Ceiling speakers are the most common choice for shops, restaurants and offices, because they spread music evenly and stay out of sight. Pendant speakers suit open or high ceilings, and surface-mount speakers suit walls and areas without a false ceiling.
What is a 70 V or 100 V speaker system?
A 70 V or 100 V system connects many speakers to one amplifier channel through transformers with power taps. It allows long cable runs and lets the level of each speaker be set by its tap, which suits shops, offices, hotels and malls.
How many ceiling speakers does a room need?
It depends on the ceiling height, the speaker coverage angle and how even the sound must be. As a rough guide, background music in a 2.7 to 3 m ceiling often uses one speaker about every 3 to 5 m, set during the design.
What is zoning in a sound system?
Zoning splits a building into areas that each have their own source and volume, such as the shop floor, the cafe and the fitting rooms. Each zone is controlled from a wall controller, such as a Bose ControlCenter, or from the processor schedule.
Can I play different music in different areas?
Yes. A mixer, matrix or audio processor routes each music source to the zones you choose, so the restaurant, terrace and lobby can each play their own music at their own volume.
Can outdoor speakers be used by a pool or on a terrace in the UAE?
Yes, if the speakers are rated for outdoor use. Weather-resistant models such as the Bose ArenaMatch Utility range are designed for outdoor areas, but they should still be mounted out of standing water and checked for their stated operating temperature.
What amplifier do I need for commercial speakers?
Choose an amplifier that supports the line type of the speakers, 70 V, 100 V or low impedance, and has enough channels for your zones. The total speaker tap power on each channel should stay below the channel rating, with some headroom.
How do announcements work with background music?
A paging microphone or message player is routed to one or more zones. The processor or mixer lowers the music automatically while someone speaks (ducking), then brings it back up.
Is a background music system the same as a fire evacuation system?
No. A voice evacuation system is part of the fire and life safety system and must be approved by the local civil defence authority. A background music and paging system does not replace it, but it can be wired to mute when the fire alarm activates.
Can the music volume be set on a schedule?
Yes. Audio processors and DSP amplifiers can change the volume or source at set times, for example lower music in the morning and higher at peak hours, and switch the system off after closing.
