Ceiling and conference microphones for meeting rooms
A ceiling conference microphone is a beamforming array mounted in or below the ceiling that picks up every talker at the table without microphones on the table. Arrays such as the Shure MXA920 use more than 100 MEMS microphone elements to form up to 8 pickup beams, and a single array can cover an area of 9 m × 9 m. This collection covers Shure Microflex Advance ceiling, table and linear arrays, Yealink CM ceiling microphones, Shure Stem devices and the processors, interfaces, mute buttons and mounts that connect them.
Ceiling arrays suit rooms where table microphones would clutter the surface or where seating changes often. For a complete room with camera and compute, compare Video Conferencing Kits; for presenters who move around or speak at a lectern, see Wireless Microphones & Transmitters; and for the loudspeakers that play the far end into the room, see Ceiling & Wall-Mount Speakers.
How to choose a conference microphone
Coverage area per microphone
Start with the area each device covers, then count devices for the room. The Shure MXA902 and MXA901 cover 6 m × 6 m out of the box, and the MXA901 zone can be reduced to 3 m × 3 m to avoid picking up nearby areas. The Shure MXA920 covers 9 m × 9 m by default. The Yealink CM50 has a 5 m premium pickup radius with 8 custom pickup areas, and the Yealink CM20 covers a 4 m nominal radius.
Onboard processing and echo cancellation
Echo cancellation stops remote participants from hearing themselves through the room loudspeakers. The MXA902 and MXA901 include IntelliMix DSP with acoustic echo cancellation, noise reduction and automatic gain control. Other arrays rely on a processor: the Shure IntelliMix P300 processes 8 Dante channels with echo cancellation, and the Yealink AP08 offers 16 × 16 Dante channels, 8 of them with dynamic echo cancellation.
Ceiling, table or linear form
The room's ceiling and furniture decide the form. Ceiling arrays fit a ceiling grid, a hard ceiling or a suspension kit: Shure lists hard ceiling, pole and wire suspension mounts for the MXA920, and the MXA902 adds a 2.5-inch loudspeaker in the same 60 cm square housing. Where the ceiling is too high or cannot be opened, the Shure MXA710 linear array mounts on a wall, a table or a ceiling in 60 cm or 120 cm lengths, and the MXA310 sits on the table.
Connections and platform integration
Dante, PoE and one-cable installation
Most arrays in this collection send audio over Dante on the network and take power from a PoE switch. The MXA902 carries Dante or AES67 audio, PoE+ power and control on a single network cable, and the CM50 also uses Dante, so it works with other Dante-compatible devices. Plan the switch's PoE budget: the Yealink AP08 itself supplies 90 W of PoE for connected devices.
Connecting to Teams, Zoom and room systems
A Dante microphone reaches the meeting platform through an interface or processor. The Shure ANIUSB-MATRIX connects 4 Dante inputs to a room PC over USB, and the P300 adds an analog output and a 3.5 mm mobile input. Shure states that the MXA901 paired with the IntelliMix Foundation System forms a Microsoft Teams Rooms or Zoom Rooms certified solution, and Yealink CM microphones plug into the Yealink MVC Teams Rooms systems.
Where ceiling microphones are used
Boardrooms and medium meeting rooms use ceiling arrays to keep tables clear and to cover every seat equally; see Boardrooms & Meeting Rooms. Training rooms and lecture spaces use them for hybrid classes and voice lift, where the array's coverage areas keep the presenter separate from the loudspeakers; see Education & Training Spaces. Many UAE office towers have suspended ceilings over air-conditioning plenums, so check plenum ratings: the Shure MXA710 is UL 2043 plenum-rated.
Installation and room planning
Ceiling microphones perform as designed when they are planned with the room's ceiling, network and loudspeakers. Before ordering, check:
- Ceiling type and height: confirm whether the array goes into a ceiling tile, on a hard ceiling or on a suspension kit, and measure the height above the table.
- Network and PoE: list every Dante device and its PoE class so the switch can power all of them.
- Loudspeaker positions: keep loudspeakers outside the pickup areas so echo cancellation has less to remove.
Use the manufacturer's own mounting parts for microphones, such as the Shure A910-HCM hard ceiling mount for MXA arrays or the A710 flush mount housings for the MXA710, so the array sits at the angle its coverage maps assume.
Conference microphones by room size
The main microphones in this collection fall into three groups.
- Small and medium rooms: Shure MXA902 with a built-in loudspeaker, Shure MXA901 and the Yealink CM20, each covering one meeting table.
- Large rooms and boardrooms: Shure MXA920 with 9 m × 9 m coverage and camera-tracking position data, and Yealink CM50 with 127 microphone units.
- Wall, table and processing: Shure MXA710 linear arrays, the MXA310 table array and the Shure IntelliMix P300 processor.
